It’s been a transitional year for Dakota Fanning’s personal style. It seems the 22-year-old has come into her own, rolling up to the red carpet owning her looks and showcasing her personal style like the growing actress she is.

Fanning went back to black on Wednesday for a New York screening of her latest film, American Pastoral. The actress wore a floor-length mermaid-cut gown to the event, its small train trailing behind her as she walked the red carpet. Fanning’s dress broke the classic black gown mold with the elegant metallic stitching that led down its bodice, accentuating her sleek figure and A-list fashion sense.

The former child star kept her look simple and sophisticated by leaving her blonde hair down and draped over one shoulder, accessorizing the formal ensemble with the addition of a thin diamond choker and natural-looking makeup.
