The 13 Best Things We Saw at Coachella 2016
Coachella is first and foremost a concert, but it has also transformed into a three-day-long party for the fashion set, spanning from the festival grounds in Indio to quaint resorts in neighboring Palm Springs. This year's opening weekend including a multitude of guest performers, fancy four-course meals, and ethereal performance art. Below, our 13 favorite moments that you may have missed on Instagram.
1. Surprise cameos (and lots of 'em).
It's usually a safe bet that a headlining artist will recruit a guest performer onstage (especially if they've recorded a song together), but this year, nearly every major act brought out someone noteworthy. Some highlights: A$AP Rocky and Kanye West; Disclosure and Sam Smith, AlunaGeorge, and Lorde; Zedd and Kesha; Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg; and, last but definitely not least, Calvin Harris and Rihanna.
2. Calvin Klein's ravetastic Desert Warehouse party.
The brand kicked off Coachella in grandiose fashion with a star-studded bash at a massive, LED-lit warehouse space in Palm Springs. Alesso DJ'd while guests including Leonardo DiCaprio, Freida Pinto, and Zoë Kravitz tore it up on the dance floor. Got FOMO? You can experience it virtually at calvinklein.com/festival—that is, everything but the complimentary In-N-Out burger that was served as guests were exiting.
3. Outstanding in the Field's four-course sit-down dinner.
Enjoying a four-course meal might not be the first thing you'd expect to do a music festival, but Coachella is not like other festivals. For the third year, Outstanding in the Field, a roving farm-to-table culinary setup, returned to the Rose Garden VIP area for a series of dinners featuring menus by world-renowned chefs in a white tablecloth setting.
4. Revolve's epic Desert House.
The online retailer, in partnership with Bai, hosted a two-day party at a sprawling estate in Thermal, Calif., complete with a carousel, a Birchbox beauty bar and Grlfrnd denim customization booth, and two Jenners (Kylie and Kendall, natch).
5. The Retreat's three-day hospitality oasis.
If you were burnt out after Day 3 of the fest (or, let's be real, Day 1) and seeking a quiet respite from the throngs of flower crown-wearing teenagers, The Retreat, a three-day event at the Korakia Pensione hotel in Palm Springs was the move. There were spa services from Caudalie Paris and Glamsquad, fresh cold-pressed juices by Clover Juice, and even a dedicated Amazon Lounge, where guests including Emma Roberts and Kristen Stewart watched Transparent and played with the company's brand-new Tap voice-enabled speaker.
6. Dannijo, Diane von Furstenberg, and Same Swim's very chill #CHILLCHELLA brunch.
7. Jeremy Scott's celebrity-packed party.
With a mouthwatering spread from L.A. eatery Eveleigh and appearances by Katy Perry and Grimes, the splashy designer's annual soirée at the Corona Yacht Club just east of Palm Springs did not disappoint.
8. The Tinder "Matchmaker" ride at Neon Carnival.
The annual event, in which a private airport hanger is transformed into a mini carnival, drew stars including Taylor Swift and fellow squad member Karlie Kloss. Those lucky enough to score a wristband passed the time riding the Ferris wheel, playing ball toss, and, for those on the prowl, taking a spin on the Tinder-themed "Matchmaker" ride for two-somes.
9. Levi's customization pop-up shop.
The festival-ready denim brand hosted a pop-up shop at the Avalon Hotel in Palm Springs, where visitors including Kiernan Shipka and Jamie Chung got their denim patched, chain-stitched, and distressed before hitting the festival.
10. Rebecca Minkoff and Smashbox's lunch at Sonny and Cher's house.
The designer co-hosted an intimate gathering at Villa Carmelita, a private villa in Palm Springs's Mesa neighborhood that served as a love nest for the pop music duo. Also on-site was a "Match your Pom to your Pout" bar, where guests could choose a pom pom crown and coordinating Smashbox lip color.
11. Chris Stapleton's country set.
The country singer proved that bluegrass belongs at Coachella with a powerful performance at the Gobi side stage, where he belted out hits including "Tennessee Whiskey" alongside his wife, Morgane Stapleton.
12. Rachel Zoe's music festival retreat.
The fashion powerhouse's style site, The Zoe Report, teamed up with GUESS to host a day-long event at Colony 29 in Palm Springs featuring a DIY denim bar and a braid bar hosted by Batiste Dry Shampoo, where Brooklyn Beckham acquired some trendsetting man braids.
13. Sia's backup dancers.
We half expected the elusive pop singer to recruit her mini-me, Maddie Ziegler, but did not anticipate Paul Dano and Kristen Wiig to join in for an interpretive dance performance, costumes and all, as well.
