When Christian Bale is offered a role, he commits — full stop.

Bale dropped 62 pounds for The Machinist in 2004 (weighing in at a staggering 120 pounds), gained it back (and added 30 pounds of muscle) for Batman in 2005, dropped another 30 pounds for The Fighter in 2010, and bulked back up for 2013’s American Hustle. How does this guy only have one Oscar?

Anyway, Bale’s most recent film, Vice (out Dec. 21) put the 44-year-old back on the weight-gain track. In it, Bale plays the titular character, former Vice President Dick Cheney, a role that required the actor to pack on 40 pounds.

In the first trailer for the film it’s clear that Bale’s work paid off. With his thin-rimmed spectacles, thinning white hair, and gravelly drawl, the actor is Dick Cheney.

Of course, Bale isn’t the only actor in the film to undergo a dramatic transformation. His Oscar-winning co-star Sam Rockwell (who scooped up a Best Supporting Actor trophy for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) plays former President George W. Bush, and he, too, is basically the politician’s clone.
