Monday night's Met Gala red carpet was missing two of its shining stars. Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend skipped out on the fashionable bash, but the reason why makes a lot of sense.

Teigen is pregnant with the couple's second child, a baby boy, and as she's nearing her due date, the mom-to-be decided to stay in L.A. rather than fly to New York for the bash. She shared a photo of her bare baby bump chilling on the couch, joking "Waiting for my turn on the carpet at #metgala!!!! always an honor!!!"

Teigen continued to troll the big night, sharing a photo of her "Met Gala glam," aka her messy bun while chilling at home. "This year’s #metgala GLAM was #SUPER important to me as I wanted it to really embody the heavenly bodies theme!!! I think we nailed it!!" she joked.

All jokes aside, Teigen really was sad to miss the big night out. "I was gonna do a makeup breakdown but I’m honestly just very jealous I’m not there," she wrote.

She hinted at her absence last month in an Instagram post about her last public event before baby no. 2: City Harvest's 35th Anniversary Gala. In the post, she concluded, "Now it’s time to hide and get this baby ready for the world," making it pretty clear she'd be sitting the next few events out as she prepares to welcome her second child.

While we certainly missed her presence on the fashion-filled 2018 Met Gala red carpet, it would be hard to top some of her past looks. In 2017, Teigen made a statement in a sheer black and white Marchesa gown with strategically placed lace and feathers.

Teigen and Legend sat out the Gala in 2016, weeks after they welcomed their first child, daughter Luna. But in the two previous years, the model and cookbook author stayed true to her red carpet philosophy of showing a little skin in some daringly low-backed dresses.

At her very first Met Gala in 2011, sheer was the name of the game, as Teigen stunned in a black gown with a see-through skirt and thigh-high slit.

Here's to hoping we see this power couple back in action at next year's event.
