You just know that any watering hole Beyoncé frequents is going to have something unusual going for it. During her recent Mrs. Carter tour, Queen Bey and husband Jay-Z were regulars at two London nightspots: one was predictably a fashionable private club in posh Mayfair, but the other was an obscure cocktail bar in Hoxton, the city’s equivalent of Williamsburg. You won’t find any familiar labels at the underground spot called the White Lyan. Instead, all the cocktails are pre-made, bottled and then stored in freezers.

Spirits are sourced direct from distilleries, then “rebuilt” by mixologists Iain Griffiths and Ryan Chetiyawardana using vinegars, shrubs, distillates and cordials in place of citrus fruits, sugar or any other perishables. The results are surprising concoctions like the Beeswax Old Fashioned (honey-sweetened Scotch poured out of a bottle lined with beeswax), the Bone Martini (vodka, lemon distillate and a bone tincture made by dissolving chicken bones in phosphoric acid), and the Moby Dick Sazerac (rye, Peychaud’s bitters and absinthe-soaked rice paper plus ambergris, a secretion extracted from the bile ducts of sperm whales!) And attention Londoners, you may soon be even more likely to find Mr. and Mrs. Carter perched on the bar stool next to you--the couple has reportedly bought an $8 million abode in West London.
