Cate Blanchett may be queen when it comes to red carpet fashion; she's become known for pulling off elegant and avant-garde pieces with ease. But her recent turn on the celebrity walkway was much more of a surprise. The Australian star stepped out last night (Friday, Oct. 9) for the New York Film Festival of Carol in fake tattoos!

Ok, so the "temporary ink" was really part of her sequined black dress—the scrollwork was on sheer sleeves—but the visual effect was a mix of fashion rebel and bona fide movie star. That's partly the edgy look but also because Blanchett, who presumably has her pick of luxury labels, decided to go for a true indie: little known Parisian designer Yacine Aouadi, who has previously worked at Balmain.

Smartly, she kept the rest of the look simple with a side part and clean black pumps.
