Digital Studio (2); Courtesy Photo Black lipstick is rarely worn outside of Halloween or to the occasional costume party, and when we heard MAC was launching an inky noir lipstick for Black Friday this year, we couldn't wait to see which celebrity would be daring enough to try it. True to form, bold lip maven Lupita Nyong'O broke out MAC's Hautecore hue for the Gotham Awards in New York City last night, and while the product has sold out on maccosmetics.com, the star's makeup artist Nick Barose shared his pro tips with InStyle.com for getting an effect that veers more toward glam than goth. "Black lipstick is not easy to pull off, but when you keep it sheer -- not matte or opaque, but with a hint of sheen -- the effect can be feminine and glamorous in a silent film star sort of way," he told us. "To soften the color a little bit, I dabbed a dot of red gloss on the center of her lips to give the black just a hint of warmth." Because the shade is so dramatic, stick to minimal eye makeup, or go for coordinating tones like Nyong'O. "Avoid hard lip liners, and keep the rest of the face pretty and feminine. I paired Lupita's look with flirty lashes, liquid liner, and a berry cheek stain." We love it!
