Cameron Diaz is InStyle’s May cover girl! For her third time gracing our cover, we brought the one-of-a-kind star with us to Paris for Haute Couture Fashion Week—“couture really is an art form,” she says—where we learned her take on fashion, plus her fresh thinking on friendship, love, having kids, and turning 40. “I’m not trying to fit into anyone’s box about how I should be,” says the star. “I just fit in my own box.” Her new movie, What to Expect When You’re Expecting (out May 18th), explores a theme near and dear to Diaz: accepting the unexpected in life. “I would never have guessed that I would end up dating any of the guys I’ve dated—never!” she says of her past boyfriends, a list that includes Matt Dillon, Jared Leto, Alex Rodriguez, and Justin Timberlake. “I would rather have my heart broken a thousand times than never to love at all. I have so much love to give—I’m not empty of love, I’m full of love.” She’s also not setting any expectation as to whether she’ll ever have children. “Society definitely puts pressure on women to make them think their lives should go a certain way," says Diaz. "I’ve never said I don’t want children—I just haven’t had children yet. I don’t know what’s going to happen in my life!” Her lesson? Expectations, be gone.
