Calling All Clones! Recreate Cosima Nieuhaus' Winged-Out Eyeliner From Orphan Black
Only one more episode til the Orphan Black season finale! Among the many looks sported by the clones, we're especially obsessed with the dramatic liner worn by American alt-rocker Cosima Niehaus. In anticipation of tonight's episode, we asked Stephen Lynch, the head of makeup, for instructions on how to recreate her trademark look. While the effect is graphic, it's surprisingly easy to recreate! Just hold a steady hand, and channel your inner Cosima to pull it off. Keep reading to see our step-by-step GIF guide!
Start with a flawless canvas. On set, Lynch uses the Make Up For Ever HD Liquid Foundation ($42; sephora.com), and recommends going a shade lighter than your natural complexion to mirror Cosima's pale skin. Top off with a layer of Make Up For Ever HD Setting Powder ($34; sephora.com).
To give your eye shadow some sticking power, apply the same foundation to your eye area and set it with a light dusting of powder. Then, pick up the MAC Eye Shadow in Vex ($15; maccosmetics.com) and blend from your lash line to your brow. It's a "no 'crease' effect in this look!" adds Lynch.
It's time to move on to the liner! Pick up a navy blue gel eyeliner like Bobbi Brown's Denim Ink ($24; bobbibrowncosmetics.com), and use a fine-tipped brush to sweep the product across your lash line. "For extra drama, extend the eye about a quarter of an inch at a slight upward angle," says Lynch. "Then, extend the inner eyeliner toward the nose about a quarter of an inch in a downward angle to complement the outer wing." Continue the color along your lower lash line, and once you reach the outer edge of your eye, connect it to the top wing. "Don't blend! This is more of an 'alt' look, and you don't want to soften the effect," he adds.
Give your lashes a few pumps with a curler to open the eye and add definition.
Apply two coats of mascara only to the top lashes. We used Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara in Black ($28; bobbibrowncosmetics.com).
Frame your handiwork by defining your arches. "Create a dramatic arched, rounded brow with the Diorshow Brow Styler in Universal Brown ($29; dior.com)," says Lynch. Brush through using the spoolie wand on the opposite end of the pencil.
