Busy Philipps Said She Didn't Get any Parenting Support From Her Husband
She may be juggling a talk show, two kids, and a marriage, but Busy Philipps will be the first person to say that keeping everything in the air at once isn't easy. In a new interview with Parents, she said that when she approached her husband, Marc Silverstein, about having a second baby, he said that it would be all on her.
People reports that after the couple had their first daughter, Birdie Leigh, Silverstein couldn't comprehend what being a dad actually entailed. Philipps explains that she felt he didn't even try. At times, she felt like she was flying solo.
"He was not understanding how to be a dad and, in fact, didn’t try. I was parenting by myself," Philipps said. "When I told him I wanted to have a second child, he said, 'Fine, but it’s all on you.' That was so heartbreaking."
Philipps fought for support, however. She went on to say that she confronted her husband about it, making him realize that he couldn't just ignore his responsibilities or brush them off.
"Marriage is always hard, but especially when you have kids […] You’re going to go through periods when you're not into it, but there always has to be one person willing to fight. I went to Marc several times and said, 'I cannot do this anymore. Something has to change, and it's you.'"
Philipps's persistence paid off. She goes on to say that through counseling and several serious talks, Silverstein has been more engaged with parenting. But she went on to say that it's they're still working on things. But she has noticed a shift in his attitude with the birth of their second daughter, Cricket Pearl.
"We’ve had a lot of serious discussions and counseling, and he's incredibly participatory now in a way I don’t think he could’ve imagined before. We're a work in progress but trying our best, and that’s the most you can do."
