It’s been 20 years—seriously—since the premiere of the show that initiated the vampire craze that’s since sunk its teeth into the cultural zeitgeist.

On March 10, 1997, Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired and opened the gates to stardom for its young lead, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

To this day, Gellar hasn’t forgotten the series that jump-started her career, and in honor of its major anniversary, the actress, now 39, has an in-depth message to share with her longtime fans.

“As an actor, you wish for that one role where you can leave your mark and forever be remembered, with Buffy I got so much more,” Gellar expressed on Instagram. “She’s a feminist challenge to gender hierarchy. Buffy may have been the Chosen One, but I was the lucky one.”

Gellar waxed on about the lasting impact of the supernatural series, concluding with a special shout-out to Buffy’s zealous viewers.

“And lastly, but most importantly thank you to all of you, the fans. We made this show for you, and your unwavering support has kept this show going long past our seven years. You are everything. And always remember...’if the apocalypse comes, beep me’ #buffyslays20,” the actress wrote.
