When Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani perform their duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” they look like a couple that’s head over heels in love, but when Shelton first started the song, he wasn’t yet dating his The Voice co-star.

“It’s funny because I only started the song to just try to impress her because it was like, at that time, we were getting to know each other,” the country star said on the Today show.

“I was like, ‘I’m going to write her a song. That’s what I’ll do,’” he added. “The way that Gwen Stefani tells it is you sent her an unfinished song and said, ‘I want you to do the last verse.’ Is that the way it happened?’” host Willie Geist asked.

“Yeah,” Shelton said. “And then she writes the next verse and it’s way better and it’s like, 'Woah, OK.' Worked out good for the album though.”
