Blake Lively Revealed She's Secretly Been Trolling the Met Gala for Years

Fashion coincidence? I think not.

OK yes, Blake Lively has never disappointed a single soul on the red carpet — and there is no better account of her sartorial dominance than the Met Gala (EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.)

But there appears to be one subtle detail we overlooked: She’s been matching her outfit to the red carpet for her past three Met Gala appearances.

Lively pointed out the coincidence (OR IS IT?) in an Instagram post she shared on Monday, the evening the 2020 gala was originally scheduled to take place.

“...when the carpet matches the Blakes. Met Ball 2018, 2017, 2016,” the actress captioned a slideshow of her last three gala looks.

In 2018 (“Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”) Lively matched her maroon and gold Versace gown to the maroon-accented carpet; in 2017 (“Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between”) her glittering, feathered blue and gold Versace dress complemented the ball’s blue and beige carpet; in 2016 ("Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”), Lively’s pink and red-flowered Gucci gown practically blended in with the gala’s Valentine’s-appropriate carpet.

Some of Lively’s friends had questions about the red carpet swerve. Gigi Hadid joked, “How far in advance do you have to tell Anna what color to make the carpet?” — referencing Vogue Editor-in-Chief and gala co-chair Anna Wintour. Cazzie David asked, “Did you do this only for the insta slide 4 years later cause if so I’d understand.” I mean, same.

Somewhere (tropical, probably), Serena van der Woodsen is applauding.
