Billy Porter's Oscars Gown Had Secret Message About Kensington Palace
It was only appropriate for a “queen with a ‘kw.’”
Billy Porter, Hollywood royalty, took the 2020 Oscars as an opportunity to honor actual royalty.
The Pose star arrived on the red carpet in a custom Giles Deacon gown with a high-neck feathered gold foil bodice and a voluminous skirt with a print inspired by Kensington Palace. Porter complemented the statement-making dress with a pair of gold platform Jimmy Choo boots and Atlelier Swarovski jewelry.
Porter’s stylist, Sam Ratelle, thought a royal approach would be appropriate for his multi-hyphenate client, whom he described to The New York Times as “a queen with a ‘kw.’” The gown’s skirt was designed in reverence to Kensington Palace’s gold domed Cupola Room, which bears statues of Roman gods. “I love the idea of Billy being this kind of messenger sent from the gods,” Deacon told NYT.
This isn’t Porter’s first time taking on godly couture. He dressed as an Egyptian Sun God at the Met Gala in 2019 (riding in on the shoulders of six shirtless men, no less).
