Exclusive: Getting Red Carpet-Ready for the Oscars with American Sniper Star Jake McDorman

When Jake McDorman hit the red carpet at tonight’s Academy Awards, he didn’t just look good—he did good. For his first time attending the Oscars, the American Sniper star was tapped to represent Red Carpet Green Dress, an eco-fashion campaign founded by Suzy Amis Cameron (James Cameron’s wife) in 2009. Benefitting the educational nonprofit MUSE School CA, the campaign challenges designers worldwide to create a red carpet-ready tuxedo or dress made from sustainable materials.

“It’s amazing to be able to represent a such a great organization today,” McDorman exclusively told InStyle while he was getting ready for tonight’s ceremony. “To be at the Oscars for American Sniper and then also supporting Red Carpet Green Dress is just twice as cool for me.” Plus, he’s in good company: Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez was chosen to wear this year’s contest-winning gown. “We’re each other’s date for the night,” McDorman revealed.

In the three weeks leading up to the Oscars, McDorman has had multiple fittings to tailor the tuxedo designed by contest winner Tingting Chen, a fashion student at ESMOD-ISEM in Paris. “This whole process has been very educational for me to learn about sustainability in fashion,” McDorman said. “My outfit is sustainable from head to toe—they even gave me a pair of hemp boxers to wear underneath, so I’m one-hundred percent a sustainable man today.”
