Although there was no shortage of creative hair and makeup lining the red carpet at last night's MTV VMAs, Alicia Keys and Alessia Cara's looks made the biggest statement of all. Last night, not a drop of foundation was to be found on eiher star's face, and we've never seen them look more stunning. Sure, we're going to assume some skincare was involved considering the beyond-radiant glow both stars have, and it's a pretty bold move in the era when Instagram-famous contouring techniques reign supreme on the red carpet as well as the real world.

Back in May, Keys penned an essay for Lena Dunham's Lenny Letter on her decision to go without makeup. "Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture? What if they posted it?" she wrote. "These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me." Following a photoshoot for her song "In Common," Keys decided to leave her makeup bag behind for good, and made her first red carpet appearance sans-foundation at the BET Awards. The bare-faced beauty movement is officially underway, and we are so here for this.
