Khloé Kardashian is looking good these days. Crazy good. So it’s no surprise that the world has become obsessed with how she got into such killer shape. We sat down with the star on Thursday afternoon in N.Y.C. at the Kybella Live Chin Up event to drill her on exactly how she got those enviable abs. Below, lessons we learned about getting a bikini body from Khloé Kardashian.
1. Start with a Healthy Breakfast
I’m a big oatmeal girl. I just love oatmeal. I eat cereal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but I love bad cereal. I’m like, "Give me Fruit Loops!" I don’t stop. I’m addicted to the cereal. But instead I try to eat egg whites or turkey bacon, that kind of stuff. I have a very substantial breakfast because I work out so much too. I need substance. I had to finally come to terms with the fact that Fruit Loops is not giving you any nutrients. This morning we passed a row of Lucky Charms. I was like, "I saw Lucky Charms." That’s what I would eat for any meal, is cereal. It’s just so good. That damn leprechaun!
2. Kick Criticism to the Curb
I’ve always been told, "Oh you’re overweight," or "You’re the fat sister." I could have either succumbed to all of the people’s criticisms of me, wanting me to lose weight on someone else’s time. I’ve tried. I’ve tried diets. I’ve tried unhealthy things like going on a cleanse for 30 days. But I wasn’t ready. I need to do things when I’m ready. I believe in people doing things on their own time. It’s my philosophy.
3. Never Say Never
It’s such a great feeling when you finally find your own lane and for me, fitness fell into being a lane of mine, definitely not where I think anybody expected me to be. I didn’t even expect it. I didn’t think I could keep this charade up even for a month. I was like, ‘I will never go to a gym for a month.’ But I love my lifestyle now. I love how healthy it is.
4. Don't Slack Off—Ever
I live in Calabasas so it’s really far [from trainer Gunnar Peterson, whose gym is in Beverly Hills] and people are always like, "Why do you make the drive?" One, I’m all about energy. If I like you, I’ll move mountains for you because it’s about how I start my day, too. I want to be around good people. And also, I love his gym. It’s private and it’s just serene and it’s great. No one’s bothering you. I’ve been going to him for like three years straight.
5. Develop a Buddy System
Sometimes I’m like, "I can’t do the drive," so Kourtney [Kardashian] and I will have a buddy system and we work out with her trainer, and he’s great. So there’s always a backup if I can’t get into the gym.
6. Fuel Properly Post-Workout
I always bring an Oreo Cookies and Cream protein shake by Select ($33, amazon.com). It’s so good and I just have it with water and ice. I love it. Then I always have Justin peanut butter packs ($15 for a 10-pack, justins.com); they have almond packs too. I eat those because I sometimes am so depleted that I’m like, "No one talk to me!" So I have those packs in my workout backpack and I just have one and it just gives me that energy that I need.
7. Do Everything in Moderation
I still will drink. I still have fun, but it’s just different now. It comes with age. When I was 21, you’re just a mess and you don’t care about what you eat or any of that, so I think just [growing up] made me have a healthy lifestyle, and I love it.
8. Celebrate the Results
I almost threw up the other day at [Peterson’s] gym. It’s so hard. It was crazy. But it’s so rewarding. Someone just said, "When do you feel your sexiest?" And obviously when you’re in a gown with hair and makeup done, anyone can feel sexy. But for me, it’s after a workout. When I walk in the gym, I feel like s@#*. But when I walk out I feel so accomplished and empowered even though I’m sweaty and gross. My skin is glowing. I just feel like really badass, because I have really masculine workouts. It took only an hour out of my day, and I did it and I feel great and now let’s finish this day. I just feel good.
