Pharrell Williams has power dressing down to an art form. Just look at his towering Vivienne Westwood hats, which are quickly climbing to iconic status, and his ever-changing red carpet get-ups (see his shorts from this year's Oscars).

But it turns out that these fashion stunts might not be as calculated as you think. "I'm not wearing these things because I'm looking for attention," he told InStyle.com at the launch event for his I Am Other collection at Uniqlo's flagship store in New York. "I'm doing it because there's something on the inside that said to me a) how do I feel this morning, b) where the hell am I headed, and (c) what's the climate going to be like?"

Surprisingly, the buzz around his most-talked-about look—that Vivienne Westwood Mountain chapeau—wasn't previously planned, he said. "I just thought, 'I want to wear this hat.'"

The Marilyn Monroe singer also explained that the Grammys was not the first time he donned the statement-making headpiece. He purchased two styles—a brown suede one and a straw one—six years ago per Ronnie Newhouse's recommendation, he said. And he even wore one for past appearances on MTV and on ABC's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

Willliams explained that his beloved Mountain hat was "on vacation" at Monday's Uniqlo event, but he did substitute it with a Selentino design (above).

When asked about his next big red carpet reveal, Williams said, "I’ll probably know that morning—whatever it is." We're waiting with bated breath.
