Each year, the organization, which is the world’s largest for LGBTQ advocacy, honors those who use their platform to champion LGBTQ-include stories. So who made the cut? Miley Cyrus, Kesha, Halsey, Sam Smith, and Kelela (to name a few) are in the running for Outstanding Music Artist, while the year’s top films like Call Me by Your Name, Lady Bird, and Battle of the Sexes received a nod. In addition, Jay-Z will receive a Special Recognition Award for his song and music video “Smile,” which features his mother, Gloria Carter, who came out as a lesbian in the song. “At a time when anti-LGBTQ policies and harassment are on the rise, it is imperative that Hollywood and news media tell more LGBTQ stories that reflect the community’s rich diversity—and build understanding that brings all communities closer together,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “This year’s nominee showcase stories that span races, genres, ages, and geographies, challenge misconceptions, and broaden understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ people across the globe.” The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies are scheduled for April 12 in L.A. and May 5 in New York.
