Don’t be fooled by the name. This is not your typical tea party.

Just a day before the Golden Globe Awards, stars like Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Saoirse Ronan and more headed to the exclusive BAFTA Tea party in Beverly Hills, Calif. to celebrate this year’s nominees, with most attendees sipping glasses of champagne rather than cups of green tea.

“You just feel more at home at a BAFTA event,” Martian actor (and Brit) Sean Bean told us. “There’s a lot more Brits here…There’s some great events going on, but BAFTA is grounding to these few days.”

Sam Huegan echoed those sentiments, telling us, the tea party “is really good fun. It’s nice to see a lot of familiar faces. Joanne Froggatt is an old friend. So, it’s nice to catch up with people.” The Outlander star added with a laugh, “Later on, it gets a big drunker and a bit messier.” So much for proper English tea!

The vibe at the fete was relaxed, with guests leaving their intricate gowns at home and instead opting for chic daywear, like Blanchett, who stunned in a black Camilla and Marc top and a hot pink skirt. Before the Carol star headed inside of the event at the Four Seasons Hotel, she shared a laugh with her co-star Mark Ruffalo. Or there was bright young thing Ronan who looked lovely in peach-y Lela Rose layered dress.

Inside the bash, guests like Chopra and Flesh and Bone star Sarah Hay sipped champagne and chatted, while other guests noshed on cucumber sandwiches, Welsh Rarebit, smoked salmon on wheat bread and an assortment of desserts including lemon meringue bites and mini chocolate éclairs. Hay, who received her first Golden Globe nomination for her first acting job on the Starz show, told us the whole awards season experience has been surreal for her so far, adding that it’s “really too exciting. I feel totally out of place.”

Still, she looked completely in place as she enjoyed the fete in a black dress paired with a gold Judith Leiber clutch, mingling among the likes of her fellow nominees, including Caitriona Balfe, Rachel Bloom, Alicia Vikander and Brie Larson.
