13 Reasons Why is the new Netflix series everyone is talking about, but it wasn’t until very recently that stars Katherine Langford and Dylan Minnette realized the extent of their newfound fame. The co-stars made their first-ever talk show appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday and discussed the moment when they really realized how big their show had become.

For Minnette, the realization came at Coachella this year. “At one point I was walking in front of a crowd and I heard some people whispering. Someone was like, ‘Is there going to be a season two?” And I was like, ‘I have no idea!’ And then someone, when I was past them, went, ‘Clay.’ Just one person. And I turn around I just waved and everybody screamed. Everybody screamed, and I didn’t know what to—I ran away,” he joked.

For Langford, it was a few weeks ago, when Lady Gaga responded to an interview she had done, writing “Katherine” with a heart emoji. “I kind of freaked out a little bit,” she said, putting it lightly. “If anyone knows Katherine, if I’m doing an interview and I bring up the words ‘Lady Gaga,’ we have to take a take a minute and stop, so that was a big moment for her,” Minnette clarified.

DeGeneres had already gotten wind of Langford’s Gaga obsession, and surprised her with two V.I.P. passes to a Lady Gaga concert for her 21st birthday. The 13 Reasons Why star responsed, of course, by erupting into tears.

The actors also addressed the controversy surrounding the show. “The main goal, I think, overall is just to start conversations that we think are necessary to be had and to bring these issues to light and to show them in a real way. If people are talking about it, we’ve reached our goal,” Minnette said.
