Katie Holmes just wore a confusing outfit. But it's the type of confusing outfit we've definitely all fallen victim to this time of year because, well, it's all we can come up with when the weather won't make up its mind. One day it's sunny and in the high 60s, the next day it's snowing — or even worse, when the temperatures are in the low 30s in the morning and quickly rise to 60-plus degrees by mid-afternoon. How does one dress for that?

Holmes was photographed in New York City in a look that falls between winter and spring. In fact, her outfit — which included a red butterfly-print Kate Spade dress, black wool coat, and slingback ballet flats, a divisive shoe — basically screamed winter on the top, spring on the bottom. A face mask and a baseball cap kept her incognito while she roamed the NYC streets, though we'll always recognize those eyes and shiny, bouncy waves.

But let's back up to those shoes. Holmes usually wears her go-to sneakers or boots but lately she's been stepping outside of her comfort zone (pun intended) with more controversial styles, like slingback kitten heels and slingback flats. The footwear style stirs up a lot of opinions, and that's because it might conjure up thoughts of your grandma's shoe closet. It's a sensible granny trend not everyone is on board with. She probably wore them with stockings, maybe even socks if she was feeling bold, but there's no denying that slingbacks — known for the sling-like strap that goes around the back of your foot — are quite practical. (Grandma does know best, after all.)

Slingbacks like Holmes' allow your heels and feet to breathe, without the risk of slipping off your feet — like can be the case with backless mules. No wonder Holmes wore this spring shoe in the Big Apple. Would you dare to wear the slingback? If so, shop it below.
