Photo: Gotham/GC Images I chalk it up to sheer optimism that I expect each winter to be more manageable than the last. But, as ever, the joke was on me this past week when it hit 29 degrees in New York City and all I had to show for it was an Acne leather jacket with a removable shearling collar that I told myself would be "just as good as a winter coat." Hah. See, what I should have done was, one, wrap my head around the fact that these icy urban tundras will always be colder than I imagine and, two, invest in outerwear that accommodates for that. Selena Gomez is apparently better at this than I am, considering that she discovered the most genius solution for those days when "cold" is an understatement. While filming "Only Murders in the Building," Gomez was seen wearing a coat equipped with battery-powered heating pads. Her Ororo parka looks just like a regular (albeit sleek) waterproof winter coat, decked out with a detachable hood, faux-fur collar, and cozy fleece lining, but it's also secretly equipped with carbon fiber heating panels in the torso. Using the included rechargeable battery, you can activate heat up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit for as long as 10 hours, leading Amazon reviewers to call it the "warmest coat I've ever owned!" "After looking at heated jackets for DAYS, it finally got cold enough to make a choice," wrote one buyer. "And I am super glad I chose this one! Fits perfect. Enough room for even a thick sweater underneath. Not that you'd need it! It's warm without the heat activated. I have only charged the battery upon arrival, and it's lasted so far for weeks, as I only use it for the really cold moments. I can truly say this is the warmest, roomiest coat and the heated part (I mostly felt on the back panels) is an extra bonus when it's frigid out." Aside from the jacket's brilliant heating capabilities, it's full of hidden surprises — I personally can't get over the fact that, minus the fur trim, the entire coat is machine-washable, heating components and all. And on warmer days when you don't need to conserve all the battery power for added heat, you can even use it to charge your phone.
