Photo: Bellocqimages/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images The other day I showed my mom a bag of vintage pieces I just bought at a thrift store. Nearly all of them were pieces of lingerie from the '50s and '60s. Slip skirts, and slip dresses, reimagined by me as everyday wear. "But those are undergarments," she said. To which I replied, "That's exactly the point." Clearly, Laura Harrier agrees. For a while now, celebrities and fashion editors alike have been turning to vintage nightgowns and sheer skirt slips for the perfect summer look. It's honestly a match made in heaven for the sweltering heat most of the U.S. is experiencing right now. These pieces are easy to thrift at your local store or on Etsy, and they're so lightweight, you barely realize you have them on. While out at Jennifer Klein's Day of Indulgence party, Harrier wore a simple satin slip with black slides and a Louis Vuitton pochette purse. While Harrier's dress doesn't appear to be vintage, it's likely a designer take on the look that can't stop selling out at thrift stores. And thankfully, if you don't want to drop a couple hundred dollars or spend hours at The Thrift, there are options on Nordstrom for as little as $59. There's also a ribbed version by Skims for $78, and the popular under-$100 Free People Tri Me colorblock satin slip dress every TikToker is obsessed with. But Harrier also demonstrates an excellent point that my mom didn't immediately grasp. These dresses aren't just great for a day out with friends, but they work for special occasions, too. Like a Day of Indulgence or a postponed wedding. Nordstrom has plenty of more high-end options for these occasions as well, including dresses by Burberry and L'Agence. Jennifer Aniston-loved brand Vince also offers a nice middle ground and its take on the look is just under $300. Sure, moms might not get it. They might even say we all aren't wearing these kinds of dresses the correct way. But if that's the case, then we don't want to be right.
