"Escapism" may very well end up being Merriam-Webster's word of the year for how deeply committed we all are to pretending we're not experiencing 2020 in real time. How else can we explain the rise of trends like Cottagecore or our obsessive '90s nostalgia? Perhaps the most "get me out of here" trend to emerge, though, is our desire to turn ourselves into dolls — you know, inanimate facsimiles whose painted-on smiles make them seem happy but which can't actually feel the emotional effects of, say, five minutes of Fox News.

The babydoll trend started at our feet, with celebrity fans including Zoe Kravitz and Sarah Jessica Parker making a strong case for T-strap shoes and Mary Janes, often paired with socks. Then babydoll dresses exploded among A-list expectant moms like Emma Roberts and Sophie Turner who wore the frilly, puff-sleeved "frocks" (and we don't use that word lightly) on proud, belly-baring outings. Now, in fall's first moments, celebrities are proving that they're bringing this trend with them into the next season no matter what it takes.

Just this week, Diane Kruger went grocery shopping in an all-black outfit featuring an eyelet lace babydoll dress and combat boots. At the same time, Chloe Sevigny sported a grey babydoll-inspired apron dress with a similar combat boot situation and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley posted a mirror selfie on Instagram Stories in a high-end version of the fall babydoll dress. And, while not a celebrity per se, can we talk about the newest American Girl doll? Even actual dolls know it's their time to shine.

Shop essential babydoll pieces that will make you feel like you're somewhere else — whether that's out of 2020 or in a celebrity's enviable closet.
