Question: What was the most exciting trip you took this year? Was it in a faraway under-the-radar destination still undiscovered by tourists or was it a in trendy hot spot? That's what Travel + Leisure is trying to find out and the winner will be "crowned" Destination of the Year 2016.

The magazine just announced the contenders for its third annual contest and the list is giving us some serious wanderlust. You'll find familiar places such as Paris and Washington DC that have proved for the past 12 months they are well worth another visit because of chic new hotels, restaurants, or can't-miss events. But there are also less popular destinations like Ischia, a volcanic island in the Gulf of Naples in Italy; or Korea, a country famous in the U.S. for its beauty products and food.
