When it comes to food pairings, there are few things more satisfying than chicken and waffles. The fluffy grid-patterned cake of batter, combined with the crispy and juicy meat, is enough to send you into sensory overload—and nobody knows this better than Shay Mitchell. The Pretty Little Liars actress and aspiring foodie recently took to Instagram to share a snap of her epic brunch platter at the Southern-style restaurant and bar Loosie's Kitchen in Brooklyn, N.Y.

"The perfect combo... didn't chicken out for brunch this morning," she wrote in the caption to her photo. Judging by the look of her plate, she absolutely didn't, and we applaud her for it. Try the dish at home with the recipe below.

Chicken and Waffles

Serves: 6 people

Ingredients

For the waffle batter
3 cups flour
4 tbsp granulated sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter
3 eggs
1 3/4 cup whole milk

For the fried chicken and buttermilk marinade
2 chickens, about 3 lbs each
2 cups buttermilk
1 cup Louisiana hot sauce
4 cloves garlic
4 bay leaves
1/2 cup brown sugar
Thyme

For the flour
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp celery salt
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper

For finishing
1 cup hot maple syrup
1/2 cup raspberries
1/2 cup blueberries
1/4 cup micro green arugula

Directions

1. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl, then refrigerate.

2. Cut the chicken into 8 pieces: 2 legs, 2 thighs, 2 wings, and 2 breast pieces. Rinse with cold water. Place in marinade, cover, and refrigerate for 24 hours.

3. After the chicken has spent 24 hours in the marinade, in the large bowl, whisk flour, sugar baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

4. Make a well in the center, and pour in milk, yolk eggs, melted butter. Mix until everything is fully combined without over-mixing.

5. Whisking the egg whites constantly, add them to the batter. Let the batter rest for two minutes and store in the refrigerator.

6. In large bowl, combine the flour with garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, celery salt, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

7. Add the chicken and toss to coat thoroughly. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Then shake off any excess, transfer the chicken to a wire rack, and let sit for 15 minutes.

8. Heat the oil to 300°F. Add the breasts and thighs legs and wings and cook for 10 between 12 minutes. Cook the chicken until golden brown. Let the chicken rest and drain on wire racks or on a plate covered with paper towels for about 8 minutes, but no longer.

9. Heat up waffle maker. Use about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of batter per to get a perfect, full waffle.

10. When the waffles are cooked, place them on a large plate, add 2 pieces of chicken, drizzle some raspberries and blueberries and micro green arugula some confectioners' sugar and pour the hot maple syrup before serving.
