The Founders of Sprinkles Cupcakes Just Opened L.A.'s Newest Pizza Joint, and It's To Die For
The couple behind Sprinkles Cupcakes has moved into the pizza business. Charles and Candace Nelson, who started the widely beloved cupcakery back in 2005, have partnered with NCIS star Chris O'Donnell and his wife, Caroline, to open Pizzana. Combined with the expertise of Naples-born master pizzaiolo Daniele Uditi, the brand new restaurant is all the rage on the L.A. restaurant scene (Kate Hudson and Jennifer Garner are already fans).
A quick look through the menu had us drooling. The Antipasti section boasts everything from meatballs to soup to wood-fired vegetables (the Caprese Di Burrata app is calling our names). With salads including the Chop (above) and the Cesare, the Insalate portion of the menu looks incredible, too. And then there's the extensive Pizza menu, which includes classics like Margherita and Pepperoni, as well as an array of unique creations featuring the freshest ingredients—many of which are flown in straight from Italy. They even just launched a special Cacio e Pepe pizza, which we are dying to try. Pasta-flavored pizza? Say no more.
And because Pizzana hails from the founders of Sprinkles (Candace Nelson is also a pastry chef, mind you), it only makes sense for the sweets to be incorporated into the restaurant's dessert selection. Sprinkles ice cream is served alongside Italian-inspired confections, incuding the Neapolitan Ice Cream Trifecta (below) and a Salted Caramel Panna Cotta. We'll take one of each, please.
The best thing about the new restaurant—besides the food, of course—is how it all came about in the first place. "When we built our house seven years ago, we put a pizza oven in the backyard but had no idea how to use it," O'Donnell told InStyle. "We met Daniele Uditi at a restaurant he was working at and asked him to come show us how to do it. Daniele became part of the family and Sunday night pizza parties became a regular event at our house. Our friends Charles and Candace Nelson attended a couple of those parties and fell in love with his pizza as well. The idea of a restaurant was hatched after one of those parties and two years later we are in business at Pizzana."
