There is a new supergreen in town and we're already obsessed. Moringa, which hails from India, Pakistan, and Nepal, is a small tree with leaves that have been used in Eastern medicine to treat and prevent diseases for years. And now, because of its powerful properties, it's quickly becoming a must-have ingredient Stateside, as well. To get the full lowdown on moringa, we talked to Lisa Curtis, founder of Kuli Kuli, America's leading moringa brand. Curtis discovered the magic of moringa while voluteering in the Peace Corps in West Africa. She brought her knowledge back to the U.S. and founded her company, which works with women-led farming cooperatives in the developing world to provide economic opportunities and, along with the Clinton Foundation, to help reforest Haiti. VIDEO: How To Cook Kale What exactly is moringa? Moringa is a leafy green tree that grows in tropical climates, and the young leaves are harvested and milled to create a powder. Okay, so what makes it so special? The leaves are considered a superfood since they're so nutrient dense. Moringa is even called the miracle tree in some parts of the world. The leaves provide a complete protein (which is hard to find in plants!) and are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. One small tablespoon provides a full serving of vegetables, 50% of your recommended daily iron, incredible antioxidant properties, and is more nutritious than kale. Can you eat it directly from the plant like kale or spinach? Absolutely! In West Africa, for example, they eat the leaves straight from the trees. In the U.S., it's easiest to use the powders as one would use kale or spinach. Besides the abundant nutritional benefits, what other magic properties does moringa possess? In addition to the nutritional benefits, moringa has many medicinal benefits. Recent studies suggest that moringa possesses many anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, which can help prevent and manage chronic diseases including diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. What are some of your favorite ways to eat and use moringa? In addition to my morning moringa oatmeal, I love making moringa pesto and a moringa guacamole (recipe below). They're both such easy recipes and a great way to boost the nutrition of your meal and impress your friends with your superfood skills. Moringa Guacamole Ingredients 3 avocados 1 lime 1 tsp salt 1/2 cup diced onion 3 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro 2 roma (plum) tomatoes, diced 1 tsp minced garlic 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper (optional) 1/2 package of Kuli Kuli Pure Moringa Powder Directions 1. Smash the avocados, lime juice and salt in a medium bowl. 2. Mix in the onion, cilantro, tomatoes, and garlic. Stir in the cayenne pepper if you like. 3. Refrigerate it 1 hour for the best flavor or serve immediately if you can’t wait to try it!
