Thanks to the pandemic, I’ve become a pro at doing a lot of my hair maintenance from the comfort of my home. I’m basically an expert at applying at-home hair dye, and even use my processing time to get errands done… but mostly scroll TikTok. While on my favorite app, I’ve discovered quite a few creators raving about the Kristin Ess Signature Hair Gloss

It’s touted as a shine-enhancing, in-shower treatment that you can get done in 20 minutes or less. Ever since my hairstylist introduced me to Kristin Ess’ signature line, I’ve been hooked on a couple of products, and I was all too happy to watch people rave about the results they’ve seen with the gloss. Creator @jmfidler loves the “vibrant” results, @oliviaboblet said it gave her “the softest, most shiny hair,” and @tiny_tobasco’s stunned “after” look in her recap video — viewed more than 3.5 million times — says it all.

Hair gloss is a single-application product that can boost shine and help with brassiness and tone (depending on which shade you get), as well as deep condition. The Kristin Ess Signature Hair Gloss is available in 13 shades for everyone, from platinum blondes to those looking to add a deep, rich amethyst color to their brown strangs. (It also comes in a clear option if you’re just looking to add shine.) Each box has helpful guidance if you don’t know which is right for you; for example, the Chocolate Cosmo shade reads: “Choose this color if you have dark brown hair and you want to amplify or add warm tones.”

The instructions are simple: Patch test, apply to your entire head, and wait 10 to 20 minutes. When time’s up, rinse, then shampoo and condition like you normally would. Like regular hair dye, take precautions when applying to your hair such as wearing gloves, and watch out for the formula, which is runnier than regular at-home hair dye. For anyone looking to cover grays, take note that the product does not contain permanent color, though one shopper raved that the gloss is able to cover their grays for “three weeks at a time.”

If you’re looking for more validation that this is an easy-to-use, affordable product that works, just turn to the hundreds of positive ratings and reviews. “It definitely toned down the brassy orange ends I had from an old balayage,” one shopper wrote. “Much better than spending $100 at a hair salon. Very happy with the results!” Another customer raved that the gloss is “perfect for in-between hair appointments,” and a third said that it “added the pigment back to [their] faded brunette” strands.
