The Choppy Bedhead
- Flat on the top, with gentle bends starting midshaft, this style channels the unfussy texture gained from a night of good old-fashioned beauty rest.
- 1. Build a foundation:To achieve January Jones's look, work a palmful of a volume-building styler, like Vidal Sassoon's Pro Series Waves Hair Primer Spray ($4; vidalsassoon.com), into damp hair to "prevent stringiness and give some hold," says Ciara's hairstylist Cesar Ramirez.
- Degree of Effort: Moderate

2. Smooth it out: Ciara's stylist uses a boar-bristle round brush (or whichever tool you prefer for the most control) to blow out hair until it's silky and bouncy.

3. Add heat:To get a look like Lily Collins, wrap chunky sections around a warmed-up wand, like T3’s SinglePass Whirl Wand ($130; ulta.com), alternating the twist: Roll hair close to the roots and leave out the ends, or start at the ends and skip the roots. Brush through fully cooled spirals.

The Urban Wave
- A few drops of oil and a blast of matte dry shampoo lend contrasting finishes-both soft and piecey-and take rumpled waves into new territory (somewhere between boho and SoHo).
- 1. Define and dry: To zap fuzz, apply a moisturizing oil, like Dove's Pure Care Dry Oil Restorative Treatment with Anatolian Pomegranate Seed Oil ($12; drugstore.com), to damp hair, advises Ashley Olsen's hairstylist Mark Townsend. Air-dry fine or medium strands; rough-dry coarser hair.

2. Curl unevenly: Olivia Munn's rumpled look isn't achieved by your standard curling iron. Hold a double-pronged curling rod perpendicular to hair (Rsession Pro Tools Nalu Waver, $100; beautystoponline.com), and wrap sections around each barrel in an S pattern, starting about 2 inches from the roots. Then turn your wrist slightly so that the two barrels go from being on top of each other to side by side. Continue all over the head.

3. Mess it up: Rather than brushing your waves, mist on several spritzes of dry shampoo and rake it through with your fingers to define the ripples like Jessica Alba's (this is the piecey part). "Shake the hair, scrunch it, do whatever you want. It isn't a delicate style," says Townsend.

The Second-Day Blowout
- This undone style mimics the hint of volume and movement you get on Day 2.
- 1. Mix a cocktail: Apply a quarter-size dollop of texturizing cream (L?Oreal Paris EverStyle Texture Series Tousle Crème, $7; drugstore.com) with a squirt of moisturizing oil. "This gives hold and definition," says Rod Ortega, who works with Blake Lively. (Skip the oil if you have fine hair).

2. Dry with a diffuser: For Olivia Palermo's unfussy locks, put down the brush and just use a diffuser plus your fingers to rough-dry strands. "You'll enhance any natural wave and create the right beachy texture," says Ortega.

3. Seal it in: If you've coaxed out a wave, finish with texturizing spray. If not, bend large sections just one time around a 2-inch curling barrel and prepare for Kate Bosworth's enviable waves.

The Neo-Fro
- This updated Afro is just as cool and sexy as ever. The key to this season's tall order is adding more definition to individual strands.
- 1.Hydrate: For Brandy's lush curls, rake a leave-in conditioner (Hair Rules Nourishment Leave-In Conditioner, $18/8 fl. oz.; hairrules.com) through wet strands. "This will add moisture and help protect strands from heat," says hairstylist Anthony Dickey. Detangle with a comb attachment on a dryer.

2. Hold and twist: Rub a drop of botanical oil into hands, then start at your hairline and twist six or eight sections straight back toward the nape, adding small chunks of hair as you go. Bobby-pin at ends to hold each in place. "It's like French braiding, only easier," says Dickey, who works with Solange Knowles.

3. Dry and unravel: Once hair is dry-either naturally, or after using a hooded dryer (Conair Pro Silver Bird Professional AC Turbo Hair Dryer, $45; sallybeauty.com) -gently untwist and break up rigid curls with your fingers for Yaya DaCosta's fluid style. "Fluff at the roots, and apply a shine spray or finishing cream (Jane Carter Solution Twist & Lock Cream, $22; janecartersolution.com)."

The Lush Tumble
This coolly elegant sidesweep uses a tapered styling wand and mousse to get a swingy, touchable set that's full of body, not nostalgia.
1. Boost volume: For even distribution, squirt lightweight mousse onto your palm, touch your brush to the mousse, and apply throughout damp hair, advises Amy Adams's hairstylist Laini Reeves. Then blow-dry the hair and make your part.

2. Curl away: To achieve our July cover girl Kate Hudson's mane, flop hair over your part to life the roots, then hold a tapered curling iron (Paul Mitchell Neuro Un-clipped 1 u” Cone-Shaped Barrel Styling Wand, $90; paulmitchell.com) vertically and twist 3-inch sections away from your face. "Bigger sections will create that glamorous feel," says Reeves.
