Even if Halloween is your favorite holiday, celebrations are bound to look a little differently than they did when you were a kid. First, you go from collecting pounds of other people's candy to purchasing your own stash (at half price on November 1, mind you), and soon, even dressing up in lavish costumes loses its appeal. Granted, easy Halloween costumes that require little to no effort to put together are definitely preferable, especially you're going from work to a party. But just because you're looking for something "easy" doesn't mean you should be looking for something cheaply made that you'll only wear once.

A common misconception about easy Halloween costumes is that the goal is to find something on the bargain rack you can throw on for the festivities and possibly toss after the fact. Not only is this extremely wasteful, it's also a missed opportunity. Think about it: when you were a child, your parents most likely kept your costume post-October 31 for dress-up purposes. As an adult, you could (and should be) doing something similar, aka investing in pieces you'd want to wear after the holiday.

Halloween Costumes

Hear me out: Halloween has always been an excuse to shop, and as adults, we should absolutely use this excuse to our advantage. Instead of focusing on the candy aspect of the holiday, see it as an opportunity to add a new piece to your capsule wardrobe by purchasing items that can have a permanent space in your closet long after October 31st. To help you do just that, we've rounded up some easy Halloween costume ideas that can come to fruition with the right purchases, below.

JLo Circa 2001

If this outfit from the "I'm Real" music video doesn't scream Y2k, we don't know what does. On that note, revisiting looks from the early 2000s might not be a bad idea for Halloween 2021 because looks from the early aughts are coming in hot for the fall/winter season. Complete the costume with layered gold necklaces, chunky hoops, and white sneakers, and save the velour shorts set for cozy nights once temperatures start to drop.

A Witch

One of (if not the) easiest Halloween costumes to throw together is a witch. And while you can accessorize with a pointy hat or wand, one thing's for sure: you're going to need a black dress. Seeing as how the LBD is widely considered a closet staple, what better time to add the must-have, highly versatile item to your wardrobe than for All Hallow's Eve?

Spotted: A fashionista in need of an easy Halloween costume. With the return of Gossip Girl on HBO Max, there's no doubt in our minds that posing as the next generation of Manhattan's Elite will be a popular choice. And while this writer is personally obsessed with Audrey Hope's wardrobe, Julien Calloway's style is the easiest to mimic. To re-create her met steps ensemble, treat yourself to an oversized white button-down. It's comfortable, classic, and you'll get a ton of use out of it long after your candy bowl empties.

Kourtney Kardashian as a Vampire

It wasn't even Halloween when Kourtney Kardashian bore vampire fangs in her Las Vegas hotel room. The Keeping Up alumn paired her pointy canines with a sexy corset and leather-looking bottoms, an outfit you can definitely wear again and again — for date nights, happy hour, or with a blazer for the office (fangs optional, but highly encouraged).

Sandy from Grease

Sandy 2.0 is another easy Halloween costume to pull together because it's likely you already have most of the pieces you'd need in your wardrobe: tight black bottoms, a black top, and a leather jacket. However, you may not own a pair of highly versatile red heels, aka the pop of color your wardrobe craves.

First, there was cottagecore, then came faecore, yet another whimsical aesthetic trend imagined by Gen Z. Now that all things ruffly and pastel are considered fashionable and not childish, here's your chance to splurge on that Selkie Puff Dress you've been heart-eyeing for months. You don't even have to sport a pair of wings; as long as you go all-out on your makeup, your party guests will get the picture.

Jenna Rink From 13 Going On 30

If you've ever watched the dance scene in 13 Going On 30 and drooled over Jenna Rink's multicolored mini dress (when you aren't too busy drooling over Mark Ruffalo), this easy (and incredibly affordable) Halloween costume is for you. The dress is an iconic anomaly, but thanks to Gen Z store, Cider, you can own it, too (and if you only wear it on Halloween, you won't be doing the dress justice).

In addition to fashion stylings of the early aughts and 1990s, trends from the 1970s are also seeing a resurgence. Double dip by investing in a groovy floral top to pair with bellbottoms on Halloween, then repeat the look, or wear the two pieces interchangeably, throughout the fall and winter.

Daphne Bridgerton from Bridgerton

Halloween Costumes

We burn for anything and everything that has to do with Bridgerton, and if you're a fan of the show, too, you're in luck: dressing like Daphne from Bridgerton for Halloween is much easier than you might think. On the one hand, you could go the corset route, but if you're going to pose as royalty, why not go all-out with Hill House Home's nap dress? While the brand's official collaboration with Phenomenal, Netflix, and Shondaland sold out, there are plenty of other options available to channel this iconic character.

A Fawn

Halloween Costumes

Not only are fawn makeup tutorials easy to follow, it turns out a deer is one of the easiest Halloween costumes you can dress for. All you need is something brown or beige up top, which could translate to anything from a belted cadigan, cozy sweater, or a head-to-toe, monochromatic number, like a brown jumpsuit.

You're totally buggin' if you don't think this yellow plaid number from Clueless won't forever be on-trend. To channel Cher Horowitz on Halloween, wear a white tee underneath the blazer and finish off the look with chunky, black Mary Jane shoes. As for after the holiday, play with the two-piece suit by styling it with different accessories (think over-the-knee boots and tights), and throw your hair up in a claw clip to make the skirt suit a little more casual.

A Beanie Baby

Halloween Costumes

Halloween happens at the peak of the fall season when temperatures start to drop and comfy clothes become as functional as they are fashionable. This is something to keep in mind when shopping for costumes, especially if you'll be (safely) partying it up somewhere on the chillier side. One easy Halloween costume that's also super warm is a Ty Beanie Baby. All it requires is a cozy onesie with animal ears and you can easily DIY the red and white heart tag. Once Halloween is over, you'll have the perfect lounging uniform for scary movie marathons and snow days.

Beyonce Circa Single Ladies

Bodysuits were popular well before Beyonce dropped the Single Ladies music video back in 2008, but there's no denying Queen Bey made a case for why they should never go out of style. This Halloween costume is as simple as they come: Slip on a pair of black tights, a bodysuit, and high heels to complete this sexy, sassy ensemble. Then, use the bodysuit as a foundation piece to layer over in the fall and winter.
