With the start of a whole new decade right around the corner, it's time to start thinking of fresh ways to style your curls. Seeing as natural hair is as versatile as it is, there are a plethora of ways to wear it come 2020. But if you're looking to be on-trend for the new year, Unilever Celebrity Stylist Ursula Stephen says there's one look you should be keeping in mind: the ponytail.

While ponies are nothing new, the hair expert says in 2020, the style will definitely be taken up a notch.

"A sleek ponytail was an opportunity to showcase a gorgeous beat, but today, ponies are making their own statement on the red carpet — especially among textured hair," she tells InStyle. "From the wet look with a low sleek pony to the high pony dazzled up with lots of hair accessories, like Alicia Keys, there are tons of ways to dress up a ponytail. I am excited to see how stylists will be creative this new year!"

If you're looking to create some larger-than-life ponytails at home, grab some Kanekalon braiding hair from your local beauty supply store or online. Afterwards, apply some gel and spread it throughout your hair, then use a brush to slick your curls down into a tight bun. Once you're done, loop the braiding hair around a hair tie, secure it to your bun — and voila.

Beauty YouTuber Ashley Hall also offers a step-by-step visual tutorial of how to create the look.

When you're ready for the finishing touches, Stephen recommends using Dove's Style + Care Volume & Fullness Mousse before styling to give your pony some extra oomph. Then, you can customize the hair however you'd like, whether that means a large statement plait, or by adding some embellishments, like pearls or rhinestones — a perfect way to enter 2020 with a bang.
