Curly hair is a fickle beast. Some days it falls in perfect tendrils, and other days it more closely resembles a rat's nest. At least that’s been my experience with my frizz-prone hair. As long as I can remember, my mom lovingly called my frizz my “Portuguese halo” (my family is from Madeira) to help me embrace my curls, not shy away from them. I’ve been lucky enough to try my share of hair-care brands and products as an editor, and while most might’ve managed my curls for a day, nothing has helped to nourish and tame them from the inside out — until I tried Briogeo’s Banana + Coconut Superfood Conditioner.

Founded by Nancy Twine in 2013, Briogeo is a line of natural, clean, and cruelty-free products that cater to all hair needs. Inspired by her grandmother’s beauty recipes, which she started learning at age five, Twine formulated Briogeo upon realizing there was a gap between natural hair-care products and their actual effectiveness. Since its launch, Briogeo has gained a cult following, won numerous beauty awards, and even expanded to include B.Well, which includes a five-star supplement, deodorant, and more. Twine is the youngest Black woman to secure a line at Sephora.

Let’s start by saying I’m late to the game. I finally purchased my first bottle of Briogeo conditioner when I moved from the West Coast back to the Northeast last year and remembered what true humidity-prone frizz felt like. I was looking for a conditioner that wouldn’t just mask frizz, but also repair damage and revive my curls with clean, harm-free ingredients — which (unsurprisingly) is exactly what I found in the Banana Coconut Superfood Conditioner.

First of all, this conditioner smells amazing. It’s essentially a banana smoothie for your hair, which is not much of an exaggeration considering it’s made with antioxidant-filled fruits that “detox” your strands. It also contains essential oils that brings dry hair back to life. What is it not made with? Parabens, silicones, artificial dyes, harsh sulfates, phthalates, or diethanolamine (DEA). And the formula is super rich. So rich, in fact, that I’m still using that same bottle — a little bit goes a very long way.

After one use, I instantly noticed that my hair was shinier, more hydrated, and more manageable. My curls, which had been falling a bit flat after months of searing them down with hot tools, appeared shapely and separated once they air-dried. Another unexpected side effect? My scalp, which was previously so dry from the build-up of products I used to keep my hair flat, now felt nourished and itch-free.

A year-plus later, Briogeo’s Banana+ Coconut Superfood Conditioner is the only product I recommend to my friends. My curls are back to a place I love, and I only need to wash my hair one to two times a week with a dime-sized amount of conditioner to reap the benefits. Tip: Leave it on for longer than you might normally (about two minutes) for even deeper hydration.

Even now as I type this, with 55 percent humidity in the air, there’s no frizz in sight. Shop the best-seller below and thank me later.
