InStyle's editorial guidelines Published on May 17, 2021 @ 04:00PM Pin Share Tweet Email Tracee Ellis Ross's latest hairstyles are so nice, she had to switch it up twice. For Marie Claire's summer 2021 issue, the actress and haircare brand founder graced the cover of the glossy debuting both a bob and a mullet — two looks that were totally surprising, but oh so good. Tracee Ellis Ross Showed Off Her Gray Hair in a Topless Selfie Ross's go-to stylist Nai'vasha crafted both on-trend looks for the cover shoot. The bob featured kinky-straight hair, while the mullet incorporated the star's natural texture. "Had a great convo with @lolaogunnaike at @marieclairemag about living boldly, @patternbeauty, taking risks and more," Ross captioned her latest cover on Instagram. "Thank you to the incredible team of women who brought this editorial to life!" Christine Hahn For the cover story, Ross talked about everything from balancing acting and running a business, to the pressures of being the daughter of an icon and her own struggles of navigating Hollywood at the beginning of her career. But perhaps one of her most standout and relatable quotes was when she spoke about trying to "beat my hair into submission" due to a lack of representation of natural Black beauty. "My mom would wake up on Wednesday morning with the hot comb on the stove and try and get my edges straight," she said. "Learning to love my hair in a world that doesn't mirror that celebration has been a form of both resistance and the claiming of my identity, my selfhood, my legacy, my ancestral lines, the history that I come from." VIDEO: Behind the Cover with Tracee Ellis Ross While we're used to seeing the black-ish lead either wearing her hair in braids, a bun, or out in a beautiful Afro, who better than Ross to pull off these unexpected looks (although the mullet has slowly but surely been making a comeback) and make us want to mimic them at the same damn time? So, if you were looking for inspiration as far as your next summer haircut goes, take this as a sign that you don't need to look any further.
