Sies Marjan saw New York in color before New York saw New York in color. The city with a penchant for all black finally warmed up to the neon color trend two years ago but Sander Lak, the designer and founder of Sies Marjan, always looked at his chosen city in a rainbow of hues. For years, Sies Marjan was the brightest part of New York Fashion Week. Now the brand’s Instagram and website have gone the darkest they’ve ever been, as the label closes its doors forever due to the economic impact of COVID-19.

Lak, a Dries Van Noten alum, started the brand five years ago and named it after his parents. Sies Marjan quickly became known for its dresses that resemble glamorous lounge bathrobes if they had been melted down to perfectly fit on a body. There’s also its famous color palette that makes every other color palette seem deeply dull in comparison. Lak is known for pairing color cards with dramatic textures instead of mood boarding or sketching. His designs often felt like an oxymoron: quirky and elegant. Much like Lak himself they were eccentric but always worked.

Beyoncé, Zoë Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong’o, Selena Gomez, and Celine Dion have all worn Sies Marjan and their outfits always made headlines because they were so blinding and beautiful and blissful. Sies Marjan couldn’t help but steal the spotlight every time.

The internet wrote love letters to Zoë Kravitz’s green Sies Marjan flare pants after she was spotted wearing them with a suede trench coat. When Celine Dion took a photo in a hot pink Sies Marjan suit in front of a private plane, no one even noticed her bright pink fluffy Manolos. Back in November 2019, Selena Gomez wore four outfits in 24 hours but the only one most people remembered was her bright blue Sies Marjan two-piece. The brand was also well known for being popular amongst the not-as-famous but equally cool crowd of New York creatives, despite its expensive price tag.

Now that the brand is no more, there’s only a limited amount of time left to buy a piece of New York fashion history. At Nordstrom, Sies Marjan is deeply discounted until June 21. And while Sies Marjan has always been known for selling out, this time is different. When it sells out now, it’ll actually be gone for good. Ironically, it’ll also quite literally serve as a bright spot in these times that just keep getting darker. Long live Sies Marjan! In our closets, at least.
