I got my first pair of Ugg boots the Christmas I was in eighth grade, circa 2008. It was a blur of time in which bedazzled Ed Hardy shirts and Hollister denim minis reigned supreme, and without a doubt, Uggs were the apex of footwear in my middle school.
Even as my collection of Ugg boots expanded, my first pair — those Classic Short Boots in their classic chestnut colorway — held a special place in my heart. I wore the hell out of them: I wore them with leggings. I wore them with skinny jeans. I wore them on the pool deck at swim meets. I wore them anywhere and everywhere.
But then my love for Uggs faded, and I swapped them for current trends, like Doc Martens, riding boots, and the simplicity of a crisp white sneaker. Some of my Ugg boots met their fate at Buffalo Exchange during this time, but I held on to that first pair. For years, they enjoyed retirement in the closet of my childhood home. And then 2020 hit.
When working from home became a thing, I left Brooklyn and my three roommates for some space back home in Pennsylvania. But I only packed for two weeks. Naturally, this led to me wearing some of the things I’d long left behind, aforementioned Ugg boots included.
The well-loved boots became my dog-walking and errand-running staple, first out of necessity, but then because I wanted them to be. And this wasn’t just a me phenomenon. During quarantine, it seemed like every celebrity was openly embracing Ugg slip-ons and sandals as a collective shift of consciousness took place. We decided to put comfort first. In other words: Uggs were back, baby.
After months of shamelessly wearing more-than-a-decade-old Uggs, it made sense to invest in a new pair. So I headed to Amazon and got the Classic Mini II Boots in the same chestnut colorway. The cropped silhouette of the boot is timeless, so it’s no wonder supermodels have been wearing it on repeat lately.
Slipping my feet into the plush new Uggs feels like the footwear equivalent of a weighted blanket. They’re warm and they’re cozy, like a hug. And really, isn’t that what we all need right now?
