Converse shoes have a reputation, but it’s not one you associate with politicians. When you think of Converse, you think of basketball players from the ‘70s, punk rock band of the ‘90s, or one out of every eight people in Brooklyn in 2020. Converse sneakers have always been cool, but now they’re political. At least since Kamala Harris revealed she owns an entire collection of classic Chucks.
It all started when she hit the campaign trail in Milwaukee wearing a simple pair of black, low-rise Chuck Taylor All-Stars. A video of Harris wearing the classic shoe quickly garnered over 8 million views, which makes it about as viral as a good Oscars acceptance speech. Except Kamala didn’t have to accept an award, wear a gown, or be a rambling Joaquin Phoenix to get millions of people’s attention. All she had to do was walk in the most comfortable, classic, cool pair of sneakers arguably to ever exist.
This also wasn’t a one-time thing Harris did to seem more relatable. According to Harris’s sister, the vice-presidential candidate owns several pairs of Converse, including a sequin pair one can only hope she breaks out soon. But her daily go-to is either white or black. All of them are “laced up and ready to win.”
Considering Hillary Clinton’s pantsuit became a phenomenon that has no sign to slowing down, even four years after her presidential bid, Harris’s penchant for Converse is good PR for the sneaker. Truth be told the brand clearly didn’t need any further endorsements, over 100 million pairs of Converse are sold every year. Still, seeing Kamala Harris wearing Converse is another reason to add them to your fall wardrobe. Hopefully after November they can become not just a symbol of hipsters or politicians or athletes but of winners too.
