Peplum is basically the trend that no one saw coming back, ever. It's constantly the butt of a TikTok joke about older generations getting ready to go out in 2010, chunky necklaces and gladiator sandals in toe. It feels outdated, but leave it to Sarah Jessica Parker to make a trend we thought was long gone work for 2021.

Parker has been seen wearing peplum recently, but in a way that feels elevated enough for the current year and doesn't remind us too much of cringey mid-2010s fashion. Naturally she styled it with her favorite babydoll shoes for an all-white look, which has also been her go-to look as of late. Parker's peplum top had a looser fit, with a small ruffle at the bottom. Essentially, it was subtle, simple, and perfect for summer.

Does peplum get a bad rep? Absolutely. But does it deserve it? Yes and no. When constructed out of a thicker,  stiffer material, peplums  look like something you'd wear to a board meeting. In other words, the style is a little old fashioned and buttoned up. The look has been popular in the past because it's flattering and instantly draws attention to your waist, overall slimming your silhouette. Parker's take is just as flattering, but more casual and trendy enough to wear out after work.

And if you take a quick look through Nordstrom's offerings, you'll see that Parker isn't the only one who thinks the style will have a comeback. Peplum tops are everywhere and often cost under $50. More affordable brands like Free People and ASTR have updated takes on the style. Even luxury names like Cinq á Sept and Stine Goya are jumping on the peplum train — and both of their luxury versions are on sale at Nordstrom for under $180.

When you really think about it, peplum walked so corset tops could run. They have a similar slimming effect and the styles aren't that far off from one another. Some brands, like Free People are even calling new takes on the peplum top a corset. So don't let social media fool you into thinking peplum is out — it just needed a rebrand. Parker of course is doing an amazing job assisting and we'll absolutely be following her lead.
