Coach's Latest Bag Sold Out in 2 Minutes, and It's Starting a Huge New 2022 Bag Trend
Walking into the Coach 2022 Fall/Winter show felt like turning on Netflix and walking into the screen. It took place on Valentine's Day at Pier 36 in New York City when it was still light out, but when you walked inside, the room was so dark you'd almost expect a movie to start playing. Instead, you had to walk through an elaborate set that looked like Stranger Things suburbia, complete with homes, cars, and even a driveway to get to your seat. From your seat you could easily spot a handful of Tabby bags on the arms of fashion editors in the audience. Eventually a model emerged walking a dog, and another with a handful of groceries they'd pack away in a car trunk. Then the show really started, with an army of models wearing shearling jackets that will definitely sell out and a very important Coach staple that's going to be all over 2022: the wristlet bag.
But the bag that came down the man-made suburbia runway wasn't just any wristlet bag, it was the Cashin Carry Sling Bag, an archival Coach piece from designer Bonnie Cashin's first Coach collection. Creative Director Stuart Vevers wanted to revisit all of the things Coach customers love, notably: baby doll dresses, oversized shearling jackets, and of course, practical handbags. In a press release following the show he said, "I liked the idea of creating a nostalgic world somewhere in America seen through a widescreen lens, mixing the energy of today with the nostalgia for pop culture that has always inspired me." The Cashin feels like a retro take on the best-selling Coach wristlet that many a fashion writer (this one included) has cited as their very first designer bag.

But unlike the classic wristlet, the Cashin is bigger and can also be worn around the wrist or slung over your shoulder. Seconds after going down the runway, Coach released a limited number of the bags for purchase on the brand's website, but they sold out in two minutes. For all of us who were dreaming of a Cashin, there are thankfully four other versions Coach has released with prices starting at $250.
Then there are a couple different styles of Re(Loved) Coach Cashin bags, which are bags that have been gently worn and restored by Coach's Repair Workshop. Naturally, they capture the retro spirit of the Cashin bag quite literally since they're restored vintage. The restored Cashin Carry Tote 22 will cost you $200 more, but is a more proper crossbody bag with blue pebbled leather and three separate compartments. The restored Cashin Carry Tote 29 is an even bigger tote, perfect as a return-to-work bag, for $525.
Looking to 2022, wristlet bags like the Cashin will no doubt be a huge trend. Coach's show, the more I think about it, really feels like a representation of this year: It started out much like 2020 and 2021 (unfortunately), with quiet and mundane dog walks and grocery runs. But plans are starting to ramp up and the streets are looking more like Coach's runway of models quickly walking off in every direction with places to be. And what better bag to get you from point A to point B than a Cashin slung over your wrist?
