There were few NYFW shows that captured the moment we're currently in better than Proenza Schouler. With the pandemic's seemingly never-ending grip on us (how has it already been almost two years?), it's hard to decide if we're too dressed up or too dressed down for anything and everything. Proenza's Fall/Winter collection was perfect for the in-between with comfortable, molded ballet flats, easy, billowing dresses, and a pair of practical $38 opaque tights from Commando.

A dress by Proenza will cost you nearly $2,000, which goes to show no lever of opulence is too good for practicality. When you want to wear a dress like the ones seen on the runway, sometimes you need an extra layer of warmth for your legs. I typically view opaque tights as a cumbersome eyesore, probably because I'm haunted by memories of my mom forcing me to pair them with all the mini skirts I insisted on wearing in the middle of winter in high school. But Proenza showed me a styling trick I'd actually look forward to wearing with any dress, Proenza or not.

Surprisingly, the styling of stockings and tights on the runway isn't new; this isn't the first show that's convinced me to invest in a pair of hosiery I've never thought twice about before. The 2019 Spring/Summer Prada show convinced me I needed to wear sheer knee-high socks with everything. I still wear them at least twice a week — no matter the season, which is exactly how I know a pair of these Commando matte tights will be a welcome addition to my wardrobe.

The best thing about these tights is that they're an essential styling hack to make any dress seasonally appropriate. Who says you can't wear maxi dresses in 20-degree weather? Proenza clearly shows it's possible if you add a sleek pair of opaque tights. I think they add an unexpected element that could easily make even the most floral and feminine fit feel grungy in the sexiest way. And for just $38, they're probably the only thing I can currently afford off the Proenza runway.
