Move over fashion face masks, there's a new high-priced COVID-19 accessory in town: designer face shields.

This week, Louis Vuitton launched a $961 PVC shield that features the brand's monogram on the headband and around the shield and comes complete with gold studs. The piece is part of the LV's 2021 Cruise collection and will be available in stores worldwide on Oct. 30.

It's safe to say that we've come a long way from the time in April, when luxury brands began halted production in order to make masks and gowns for hospitals at their factories. Now it seems many are dipping their toes into making a profit from of-the-moment accessories. Though expensive PPE from luxury brands was expected, for many on social media, the price tag is still a little jarring. Even as some industries are bouncing back, around the world, millions of people have lost their jobs and struggling financially due to the virus.

While it's really no different than buying a designer headband, in a certain setting the optics could certainly be strange.

Another question, of course, is whether or not this will actually protect you after setting you back a grand.

"It’s reasonable to add a face shield if you want an extra layer of protection, especially if you’re in a high-risk situation, like caring for someone sick with COVID-19 or working in an environment that requires close contact with others,” Arefa Cassoobhoy, M.D., MPH, Senior Medical Director at WebMD told InStyle for a story about the effectiveness of face shields.  They also added that "there should not be any gap between your forehead and the headpiece." Maybe for extra protection, you can add an LV scarf?
