Kate Middleton Just Wore a Very '80s Trend That Princess Diana Loved, Too

The royal popped up — with the rest of her family — on BBC's Big Night In wearing a very familiar look.

Kate Middleton channeling Princess Diana with her outfits is nothing new. She and sister-in-law Meghan Markle have been using their late mother-in-law as inspiration for years and at this point, we almost expect their dresses and coats to be some sort of tribute.

Still, when Kate and the rest of her family popped up on BBC's fundraising show, Big Night In, clapping for frontline workers fighting COVID-19, we were still stunned. Her floral Ghost London dress wasn't just similar to ones Diana wore, it included a very '80s trend, too.

Statement collars are big for spring and summer 2020, and this piece, which is still available for purchase at John Lewis, includes one that was right on trend. The ruffled trim is such a throwback, and definitely calls to mind a few pieces that Princess Diana wore decades ago.

In 1981, right before she married Prince Charles, Lady Diana Spencer wore a similar design to her wedding rehearsal. It even included a floral print, the same as Kate's dress.

A year later, Princess Diana also wore a ruffled collar while pregnant with Prince William, following a very '80s fashion trend.

Honestly, we're thrilled this look is coming back — we'll take any ounce of fashion fun we can get right now — and that Kate is on board, even while social distancing.
