I've said it before, but I'll say it again: After spending a year-plus rotating between sweatsuits and pajamas, I'm really, really tired of comfy clothes. Not so much that I'm willing to sit on the couch and relax in a stiff pair of jeans (I'm not a monster!), but as a fashion-lover, I've started to jump at any chance to get dressed up, and have even begun adding sexier items to my wardrobe. It's an interesting move when you consider my go-tos have almost always been whimsical, bright, and poufy. But these days, I'm embracing cutouts, backless dresses, and yes, I've fallen for twisted, crisscross, halter-neck tops, too.

I'm going to blame the last one on social media, where I'm constantly spotting this sternum-highlighting design on all my favorite influencers, and even discovered how to DIY my own version using a long scarf. You know when something is on your mind and then you can't stop noticing it everywhere? That's this trend to me. I've quickly become obsessed, and am constantly on the lookout for great options to shop.

Of course, like most Gen-Z-approved things today, this style isn't new new. I vividly remember seeing it in on Christina Aguilera during her "Dirrty" phase in the '00s, and the nostalgic factor is part of the draw for me.

Maybe this exact ensemble might be a bit much (I'm easing out of sweats, not sprinting), but I'd happily trade that mini skirt for other big must-haves of the moment, such as baggy trousers or longer shorts. And, while we're on the topic of throwbacks, I'd also be down to take a tip or two from '70s-era Cher, go the matchy-matchy route and adding statement earrings.

Looking at the runways, there's no denying the twisted, crisscross halter trend is back in full force and isn't just an Internet thing. Balmain put a sexy, sparkly version in its Spring 2021 collection, and a handful of crisscross dresses were seen on Bronx & Banco's Fall 2021 runway.
