Move aside, tie-dye sweats: There’s a new loungewear essential in town that’s suitable for the impending hot weather. It has Kelly Ripa, Jennifer Lopez, and tons of other stylish celebs absolutely enamored.

Enter: the caftan, or kaftan to some — a comfy staple with a history that dates back centuries. We were recently reminded of it thanks to Ripa, who wrote a sweet tribute on Instagram to her mama and to the garment that’s like a robe-tunic hybrid. “Here’s the original kaftan/caftan wearer. Mom circa 1975, followed by me in Bahamas 2018 and Hawaii 2012. We rock a Roper! #kaftan #caftan.” Like mother, like daughter.

Not only did Ripa profess her admiration for the summer 2020’s loungewear hero on social media, but she actually wore one on Tuesday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan, calling it “the most comfortable.” The talk show host explained that a lack of clothes to wear at home inspired her to dig through her storage closet, which houses tons of summery caftans. We’re betting we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the coming weeks.

According to Ripa, Natori — a brand known for its intimate and sleepwear — has seen a 92 percent increase in sales of its caftans since March. But it doesn’t take a mathematician to conclude that it’s becoming everyone’s attire of choice during self-quarantine, and it definitely doesn’t take one to know why.

Caftans are easy, breezy, and oh-so-beautiful. They’re simple to wear and lightweight, making them ideal homewear once the temperatures veer into summer territory. And they’re inherently chic, too. As Ripa puts it, caftans are a “great option if you don’t want to wear clothes but don’t want to commit to pajamas.” Amen.

Ripa isn’t the only one who’s been “caftan-ing” it, as Seacrest put it. Tons of other celebs have shown their fondness for the comfy-chic staple, including Angelina Jolie (who’s been sporting hers for years), Hillary Clinton, Rihanna, and of course Lopez.

What you wear while working from home can have a huge impact on your mood — and sometimes, wearing PJs the entire day isn’t the best for your mindset. Caftans offer that same level of comfort, but with a more put-together, stylish touch. You can wear them at home, while walking your dog, on a Zoom meeting, and, once it’s safe, on your next beach getaway. Now that’s a multifaceted closet find.

Channel Ripa’s loungewear energy by shopping the best, most colorful caftans from brands like Tory Burch, Natori, and Free People below. Trust: Once you try one, you’ll wonder why you haven’t gotten in on the caftan craze sooner. It’s never too late, though.
