One thing that kind of irks us about winter? Having to layer a coat over all our best outfits. Oftentimes, it feels like the most practical and functional options (as in, the ones that will actually keep us warm) end up being so...blah. But this season, celebrity stylist Karla Welch set out to change all that, collaborating with Eddie Bauer on an outwear collection that actually feels fun.

Full of bright, multi-colored pieces — including (but not limited to) a puffer coat, a parka, a warm leggings and mock-neck set, and a sweatsuit — Eddie Bauer x Karla Welch is the exact opposite of the old, boring stuff you dig out of your closet each year. While made to hold their own against the elements, these items also qualify as joyful and cute. Plus, considering Welch's client list includes the likes of Tracee Ellis Ross, Sarah Paulson, and Kaitlyn Dever, we're bound to spot them on well-dressed celebrities in a matter of days.

"Ultimately, you want to be warm and functional," Welch told InStyle when speaking about her outerwear, which ranges from size XS to 3X, with the highest-priced item ringing up at $279. "I just wanted stuff that you could feel super cute and fun in — stuff to work out, then go to lunch in."

As for why Welch went for more of a rainbow vibe instead of shades of black, gray, or even neon solids? The answer is pretty simple; she was paying homage to coats of winters past.

"It was really an ode to the '80s and all my favorite Esprit ads," she reveals, after joking the real reason was to prevent getting lost in the woods. "I love the colorful chaos and, honestly, outerwear and workout gear is a great place to get colorful."

We already knew that the '80s were back in a big way, but hearing it from a pro, along with seeing (and loving!) these playful pieces, it's confirmed.
