Break out the plaid and leather, because this '90s trend is fully back.

When it comes to today's top fashion trends, it seems the '90s are here to stay. But along with all those preppy styles and sexy twisted halter-necks, another aesthetic has also reemerged: grunge.

A grunge outfit doesn't necessarily mean wearing all-black, baggy clothing (although, those details are definitely helpful when it comes to nailing this look). Rather, focusing on layering pieces in a unique way and adding small yet impactful details — from certain prints to metal accessories — are also key components to keep in mind. And, perhaps the best part about grunge is that so many of fashion's 'rules' are thrown out the window; mismatched items and clashing color combos are encouraged.

Ahead, we've rounded up some of our favorite grunge outfit ideas, along with tips on how to recreate them with your own wardrobe.

A Neon Moment

When it comes to grunge outfits, we typically think of dark colors. But neon pieces — especially those with artsy prints — also work for a softer version of this trend. For an easy grunge look, style a loose neon dress with chunky shoes, then pull it all together with leather and metallic accessories, a wide-brim or slouchy hat, and some sunglasses.

Big Pants

You'd be surprised how much a single pair of pants can change up a look. To nail the grunge aesthetic, embrace the extreme wide-leg with some throwback cargos, then throw on a knit sweater and classic sneakers to make it complete.

Mix and Match

Mixing prints has the ability to take an outfit from basic to iconic, and combining multiple loud choices give off a playful punk vibe. To pull off this somewhat tricky move, pair a logomania piece (such as a dress or shirt) with a printed scarf, then layer with a solid oversized bomber jacket to balance things out. If you're hoping to make your outfit flow or feel more uniform, stick with a single color scheme and choose items accordingly.

Comfort First

If you can't seem to quit comfy clothes, not to worry. Wearing your favorite flannel (pajama?) pants with a bulky sweatshirt is the quickest way to nail this trend. If you still feel your look is missing a little something, take it up a notch with a hat and Dr. Martens boots.

Goth Meets Grunge

Leather pants with skull tee has never ceased to create the perfect grunge outfit, and although this abstract shirt is only faking numerous layers, you can accomplish something similar with a denim jacket or vest and zip-up hoodie. A few layered chains and pendant necklaces provide the perfect final touch.

Oversized

The number one tip when styling a grunge outfit is to not worry about sizing. Much like those aforementioned wide-leg pants, it's the baggier, the better in terms of top layers, too. Find your favorite oversized blazer, shacket, or even puffer coat and pair it with loose mom jeans, or play around with proportions by opting for a mini skirt.

Subtle Grunge

If you're looking to go the more understated route, you'll only need to make a few key choices when putting together an outfit. Work plaid into your outfit with an oversized button-down, stick with darker or distressed denim, and choose lug-sole or platform shoes.

Camouflage

Another versatile print that feels particularly grunge to us? Camo, which can be incorporated into your outfit with a baggy jacket or pair of pants. It's also one that can be worn as a neutral, so feel free to mix it with tartan or stripes to create an eye-catching, quirky ensemble.

Fishnets

When styled with chunkier shoes and dark-colored clothing, a pair of fishnets perfectly complements the moody vibe you're going for. It even has the ability to transform wardrobe basics, such as a blazer dress, into something bold and exciting. So if you feel your look is missing a little something, these tights might do the trick.
