Tall Women Friendly Jeans Fit

Everybody needs a good pair of jeans. But whether you’re petite, curvy, or tall, it’s actually one of the most difficult items to shop for. While each body shape poses its own challenges, any tall gal knows the struggle of finding jeans that fit perfectly through the waist but ends up accidentally cropped.

In order to find the best jeans for tall women, we interviewed a few professional stylists for their best advice when making your next denim purchase. Susan Moses, professional stylist and author of The Art of Dressing Curves recommends paying close attention to your measurements. “If you're tall, the most important things to look for are the inseam, the length of the jeans, the rise, or the measurement from the top of the waistband to the center of the crotch seam, and your waist size,” she says. This will prevent you from purchasing too short jeans in the future. We rounded up all the options that come with above-average length inseams (basically, 30 inches or more).

Best Overall

Abercrombie & Fitch Ultra High Rise 90s Straight Jean

What We Love
  • It comes in a wide variety of washes, so you can own more than one.

What We Don’t Love
  • The distressing varies between washes.

The mall brand of your youth recently underwent a makeover, and this time around, they are focused on fit. With five different lengths ranging from petite to tall, not to mention along with 15 different sizes and washes ensure there is an option for everyone. The crisscross waist creates cinching around the waist. LA-based stylist Vanessa Powell says, “High-rise jeans work well for long-torsoed tall women. This rise helps balance the proportions of the body and creates the illusion of a longer leg.” We prefer the super high-rise fit to account for longer torsos, but for something a little less intense, InStyle staff writer Averi Baudler, who's five-foot-eleven, likes the regular high-rise version, too, telling us, "These are one of the only pairs of jeans I own that don't make me look like I'm preparing for a flood. The extra-long length option gives me the slouchy look I crave with sneakers while still being long enough to wear with heels." She adds that she receives probably the most compliments on her jeans from Abercrombie. They're also created with the perfect amount of stretch, the jeans will feel comfortable for long days out with friends or even at the office. Just pay close attention to the details before you buy them: not all of them have the same distressing.

Old Navy High-Waisted O.G. Straight Ankle Jeans for Women

Old Navy High-Waisted O.G. Straight Ankle Jeans for Women

Old Navy

What We Love
  • Too often, we are forced to pay more for size inclusivity. Old Navy offers a wide selection at an accessible price point.

What We Don’t Love
  • The tall sizes don't have quite as extensive of a size range.

Denim is often priced at a premium, but it is possible to find quality options at a bargain price point — case and point, this pair from Old Navy. With so many styles and washes, we struggled to pick a favorite, but the O.G. Straight Ankle impressed us overall with its versatility. Gen-Z tried to convince us that skinny jeans were “out”, but we aren’t ready to let go just yet and actually think the staple still deserves a spot in your closet. At $50, these offer the most bang for your buck.  It doesn't come in as many sizes as the regular inseam does, though, so we hope the brand expands soon.

Best Splurge

Paige Sonja Seville Distressed Jeans

Paige Sonja Seville Distressed Jeans

What We Love
  • The vintage-style jeans already feel broken in, but they still give you a tailored fit in all the right places.

What We Don’t Love
  • It only comes in one wash.

We'll admit it: We've spent (too many) hours pawing through second-hand stores for the perfect pair of vintage jeans only to come out empty-handed. Chalk this department store find up as a win, anyway, because the perfectly worn-in denim and the slightly distressed wash look straight out of the 70s, yet, they don't leave you stuck in one decade.

If we're investing in a pair of jeans they better be similar to a good bodysuit: comfortable, flattering, and something we don't replace often. The wide leg and low rise allow you to shift seamlessly between different styles. These jeans from Jennifer Garner-approved brand Paige hang off the hips in an effortless, cool-girl way even Dakota Johnson would envy, but the rigid denim gives them a flattering fit in the waist and legs.

While the faded light wash completes the lived-in look, what would really send this pick over the edge is if they came in a couple of other colors.

Best High-Rise

GAP High Rise Cheeky Straight Jeans with Washwell

High Rise Cheeky Straight Jeans with Washwell

What We Love
  • It has two percent elastane included to make them comfortable right off the bat.

What We Don’t Love
  • We wish it had more than one wash.

Whatever style of denim dominates celeb streetwear next (we can't swim in baggy fabric forever), we doubt high-rise jeans will end up in the TikTok graveyard of discarded trends. Even if these have a '90s-inspired look, the straight leg, dark wash, and sculpting fit around the derrière give them a home in post-Y2K closets, too. A hidden, button-fly closure keeps them snug around your waist, while the two percent elastane ensures they'll be comfortable to wear right away. We like the middle-of-the-road blue wash, but we wish it came in a few more options.

Best Flare

Veronica Beard Beverly High Rise Skinny Flare

Veronica Beard Beverly High Rise Skinny Flare

Veronica Beard

What We Love
  • The subtle flare nods to the trend without looking cartoonish.

What We Don’t Love
  • They have to be hand washed.

Having been named our best flares for tall women before, these jeans, with their extra long inseam, complement long figures exceptionally well. The skinny fit through the thigh balances out a flouncy hem and steers you away from looking like a Mamma Mia character. It has just the right amount of fabric to keep you on par with the trend without feeling too heavy on the bottom, too. And they're long enough for even the tall folks to wear with heels (if you want to, of course, because we love how they look with a sneaker, too). The only downside is you have to hand wash them, but we think they'll be worth the additional TLC.

Best Wide Leg

Good American Good '90s Weightless Jeans

Good '90s Weightless Jeans
What We Love
  • The ultra-baggy style feels particularly comfortable.

What We Don’t Love
  • They're very thin.

Senior commerce editor Chloe Anello tried out this pair of jeans from Good American and can confirm they're so comfortable. The extra-wide-leg jean has a relaxed, oversized look for an easy laid-back vibe, while the thin, soft material moves with you as you walk. The jeans are called "weightless", so we're not surprised at how thin the material is, but it doesn't feel like traditional rigid denim, which typically has a thick, hefty weight to it. However, we still love how well they fit (and how long they are). It even comes with a high waist to further elongate the leg.

Best Boyfriend

Madewell The Tall Slouchy Boyjean in Wrightlane Wash: Ripped Edition

The Tall Slouchy Boyjean in Wrightlane Wash: Ripped Edition
What We Love
  • The rigid denim molds to your body over time.

What We Don’t Love
  • They run large.

For a solid boyfriend jean, we always look to Madewell, which creates effortless-looking pairs that will last for seasons upon seasons. Not only does this pair have a long inseam to begin with at 30 inches, but it also comes in a tall version that offers three extra inches on the bottom for those truly tall women among us. We love how slouchy this pair fits, too, while the rips only add to the cool-kid appeal. It comes in only this extra light wash, but we think it looks particularly summery and can imagine this high-rise pair with a cute crop top for the warmer weather. You might want to consider sizing down, though, as Madewell tends to run rather large.

Best Straight Leg

Everlane The Way-High Jean

Everlane The Way-High Jean

What We Love
  • The straight-leg cut is super forgiving.

What We Don’t Love
  • The sizing is inconsistent.

Calling all long-torsoed ladies. These ultra-high-rise pants promise to sit above your belly button. On top of that, the straight-leg style with a nearly 30-inch inseam makes this pair of denim super versatile. We love that it comes in multiple different washes, including black, ecru, and multiple blue shades, giving us the options we crave in our denim. The jeans have two percent elastane mixed in with organic cotton for a more comfortable fit that makes them especially forgiving on curvy figures. The sizing, though, leaves a bit to be desired because those who have worn the jeans before say it runs a bit small but stretches over time. We suggest taking a close look at the sizing guide before purchasing.

Best Mid-Rise

J.Crew Tall 9" toothpick jean in Aubry wash

J. Crew 9" toothpick jean in Aubry wash

What We Love
  • Comfortable and available in six washes, these jeans are an instant closet staple.

What We Don’t Love
  • It can be difficult to find your perfect fit since they run large.

Is it too much to ask for a jean we can sit in without having to discreetly unbutton after lunch (IYKYK)? Unlike other pants that annoyingly dig into your midsection, J.Crew uses 80 percent cotton for a stretchy, breathable fit.

While they might feel as comfy as your favorite sweat set, don't think they'll look sloppy in an office atmosphere. The skinny leg streamlines your figure, especially when accessorized with a belt or tucked-in button-down, and the length stops right before hitting a loafer or heel. We also love that they come in six washes, including black and white, when you want more elevated attire.

We would consider sizing down because one downside of the forgiving fabric is its tendency to stretch.

Best Black

Reformation Wilder High Rise Wide Leg Jeans

Wilder High Rise Wide Leg Jeans
What We Love
  • It comes in three different black options: plain, embellished, and button-fly.

What We Don’t Love
  • Curvy figures might find them a bit snug.

A good pair of black jeans should be a staple in everyone's closet. The versatile pants can be paired with just about everything in nearly every season. Say hello to this pair from Reformation, which we think will work just as well in the office as it will at a bar. We've tested and loved their denim before, and this pair is just as good. The sleek wide-leg pant fits slimly throughout the waist, hips, and thighs — though that might make it a tight fit for the curvy folks among us — but still creates a straight silhouette thanks to the slightly wider bottom. We love that Reformation didn't just give us one black denim option in this cut, too. You can buy a plain pair for those who like to keep it simple, but we recommend mixing it up with an exposed button-fly or beaded side. But they do come at a slightly higher price point as the plain pair, so keep that in mind when you go to buy.

Torrid Bombshell Skinny Premium Stretch High-Rise Jean

Torrid Bombshell Skinny Jean

What We Love
  • These jeans frequently go on sale, so you can get an even better price.

What We Don’t Love
  • We wish this style came in more than one wash.

Moses swears by this pair of jeans as the most complimented denim in her closet. “If you are a curvy tall woman, Torrid offers stylish options with inseams up to 33 inches,” she says. It is a skinny fit, but the pants have a lot of elastane mixed in to allow them to seamlessly slide over your curves. Moses adds that the jeans are also “complete with smoothing panels for your tummy and stretchy, compression denim," so there's no doubt you'll want to wear them all day, every day.

Best Extra Tall

American Tall Women’s Tall Jada Mom Jeans

American Tall Women’s Tall Jada Mom Jeans

American Tall

What We Love
  • Available in two inseams: 33 and 35 inches, American Tall designs denim for women up to six-foot-six inches tall.

What We Don’t Love
  • These tend to run a little large, so we recommend sizing down.

We love this modern take on mom jeans for its loose fit but structured design.“I've styled women of all heights and sizes,” says Moses, “American Tall has denim options for women that are six-foot-nine to six-foot-six. Their sole focus is on tall individuals which creates a better fit.” We love the light distressing on the classic medium wash for a rustic look. But we've found that they tend to run a bit large in the waist, so we suggest taking a close look at the size guide and potentially sizing down in order to get a better fit.

Best Made-to-Order

Unspun Light Loose Fit Jeans

Unspun Light Loose Fit Jeans

What We Love
  • Unspun doesn’t use sizing. Each pair of jeans is made specifically for your body type, so you get the best possible fit.

What We Don’t Love
  • Since these jeans are made to order, shipping time takes around 3-4 weeks.

We get it: $200 plus is a steep price to pay for a pair of jeans, but hear us out: Appalled by the amount of clothing ending up in landfills each year — or worse, burned — Unspun set out to reduce waste in the clothing industry. Instead of choosing a pair of jeans based on your size, Unspun develops a mold with your specific measurements to create their denim. All you have to do is take a video on their app and choose which style, wash, stitching, and hardware. The jeans are made to order, so there is no excess inventory buildup. Although this majorly cuts back on waste, it does increase ship time. Prepare to wait up to 4 weeks to get your order.

What To Keep In Mind

The inseam is the measurement from the top of your thigh to the bottom of your pants. Stylist Crouch recommends knowing your inseam length before going shopping for jeans. “The most common denim fit issue for tall women is the inseam length. Most brands only offer petite or plus size denim which limits the style options for tall women.” Powell suggests tall women look for inseams starting at 30 inches.

Another thing to keep in mind when shopping is the zipper length. “It is important for women, tall women especially, to pay attention to the length of the zipper,” says Crouch, “Short zippers that are not covering at least three-quarters of the denim can give the appearance of bunching or worse, camel toe.”

Your Questions, Answered

What are some common fit issues tall women face when looking for jeans?

Fit issues for tall women range beyond jeans appearing too cropped or hitting an awkward spot on your ankle. Stylist Franklin believes paying attention to the rise of the jean is super important when picking out your next pair. “A longer inseam is important,” says Franklin, “but a higher rise is just as important. This ensures a high-waisted jean is actually high-waisted, and it isn’t hitting you below your belly button.”

When should you save and when should you splurge on denim?

Powell has a few tips for when it makes the most sense to splurge on denim. “Splurge on a classic pair of denim in a light to medium wash that fits your body comfortably. Don’t pay too much attention to trends, and just focus on what works for you,” she suggests, “It might be a bit of a treasure hunt to find that perfect pair, but it’s worth the time and splurge once you meet your match. If you get overwhelmed by all the options, stick to the middle man: a medium wash, mid-rise, relaxed straight leg. These will never steer you wrong.”

How to best care for your denim?

“Don’t overwash your denim. A good pair of jeans should get better with each wear,” says Powell, “When you wash them, flip them inside out and wash on cold. This will prevent fading and shrinking. A good pair of jeans should last for several years.”
