16 New Year's Eve Dresses That Basically Say "Whoa — Hello, 2022"
If 2020 was the year that would not end, 2021 felt like the year that ended before it really began. But despite such a speedy 365, this holiday season feels merry and bright, and unlike last New Year's Eve, many us will finally be able to celebrate a fresh start with family and friends. While I'm looking forward to making up for lost time, personally, I'm even more excited to shop New Year's Eve dresses, once again getting glammed up to commemorate the start of something new.
After almost two years of holiday celebrations spent dressed in my cutest loungewear, I'm more than ready to trade in my cozy staples for something with a bit more pizazz (at least for one night). This isn't to say holiday pajamas can't be sexy or don't feel festive enough for an end-of-the-year soiree. Trust me — I've spent plenty a New Years' Eve sipping sparkling cider and noshing on pizza bagels in pj's prior to the pandemic, and I'm sure there will be many more stretchy pant-riddled holidays in my future. But there's something about ringing in 2022 in anything but a dress and heels that almost feels sacrilegious. Not because I have to, but because, this year, I can — and can also show it off in a public, social setting.
Also, you don't necessarily have to have lavish plans in order to get dressed up. Even if you're keeping your New Year's celebrations low-key with takeout on your plate and Ryan Seacrest on your TV, December 31st is a holiday all the same. So if you're feeling particularly festive come NYE — and feel inspired to dress the part — I encourage you to do so, and I have a few New Year's Eve dress recommendations to get you in the spirit.
& Other Stories Metallic One-Shoulder Mini Dress
The trend forecasters have spoken: 80s fashion is coming in hot for 2022. What better way to ring in the New Year with a New Year's Eve dress that could easily have been on sale during such a rad era? A great pick for an 80s-inspired ensemble is this lilac dress from & Other Stories. Not only is it ultra-metallic, but it's also one shoulder — two details that will help you nail the look.

Ronda Bella Dress
For whatever reason, off-the-shoulder looks have been speaking to me this season, and this Bella Dress from Ronda is no exception. Between the drooping puff sleeves and ruching detail, it feels sort of like a throwback take on your average LBD. The dress is also made from a special fabric derived from recycled plastic bottles (yay for sustainable fashion) which stretches for the perfect fit for your body.

White Fox Barbie Girl Mini Dress Black
Something about this low-plunge, cowl neckline is giving me major early 2000s vibes, and TBH I'm here for it. If you really want to live out your favorite Sweet 16 guest outfit of your dreams this New Year's eve, the dress also comes in a shimmering lilac to really hone in on the whole "Barbie girl" aesthetic. Cue Aqua's one-hit-wonder.

Saylor Evie Lou Dress
If your NYE plans involve skipping dinner reservations for a home-cooked meal and watching the ball drop from your couch, Saylor has the perfect dress. This knit midi is made from nylon and lambswool, which, combined, make for one comfy and warm ensemble. It also features a few sexy details, including a slit up the side and a deep V-neck, plus a feather trim that adds an element of fun.

Good American Vacay Dress
Cutouts and revealing details aren't going anywhere in 2022, so you might as well ring in the new year in a sexy ensemble to embraces both. Add a pair of strappy heels to complete the look, but if you live in an area where you're unwilling to sacrifice cuteness for warmth, do yourself a favor and layer up with a coat (I'd recommend this faux fur number from Nisse to keep the party going).

Wild Fable Women's Long Sleeve Ruched Velvet Bodycon Dress
Darker shades of green are well suited for Christmas parties, but lime? That electric, eye-catching shade is a good alternative to New Year's Eve metallics. Wild Fable's velvet dress is a gorgeous statement-making design that's sure to turn heads. Plus, the adjustable ruching on the sides is much appreciated, allowing you to easily alter (AKA scrunch) the length to your liking.

Reformation Mochi Dress
This dress could easily have been plucked out of a dark academia novel, and seeing as how the aesthetic is having a moment right now, Reformation's option for a New Year's Eve dress is even more appealing. The sweetheart neckline combined with the fern green colorway is elegant and sophisticated, but if the moody hue is too dark for your NYE vibe, the dress also comes in a milk chocolate brown color with white polka dots (called Au Lait), a floral, or newsprint.

ASOS DESIGN Scoop Neck Mini Satin Slip Dress in Oxblood
No, this dress isn't an Alaia, but it is giving me flashbacks to the dress Clueless's Cher Horowitz wore when she was just rollin' with her homies at a house party in the valley. Dress it up with fine jewelry or slip into a pair of fresh, white sneakers to keep things semi-casual. No matter the occasion, this mini satin slip dress from ASOS can hang.
