We’re always on the hunt for the best basics, and this week our Accessories Editor, Elana Zajdman, went looking for the perfect straight-leg jeans.

Jeans may be considered a closet staple, but for me, finding the perfect pair hasn’t been easy. No matter how many times I’ve tried to make boyfriend jeans work, they simply don’t flatter my curves. I was a fan of skinny jeans for years, but often found that while they were slim in the leg, they were baggy in the waist. And, while I love a good bootcut, at 5'9, I have a tough time finding pairs that are long enough (nobody wants to look like they’re wearing capri pants when they aren’t actually wearing capri pants).

In an effort to solve my denim dilemma, I found myself on a hunt for the perfect straight-leg jean. My obsession with this particular cut began when vintage Levi’s 501s began popping up on every model, It girl, and tastemaker a few years ago. However, it’s hard to find new, non-distressed versions of this style, and I didn't have time to scour thrift stores for a flawless vintage pair.

Instead, I spent my days searching — and discovering — five incredible alternatives, which check all of my boxes and were made in the USA. Here are my favorite pairs of classic, straight-leg jeans.

KHAITE

Jordan Walczak

What It's Made Of:  98% cotton, 2% polyurethane

Stretch Factor: Slight stretch

This brand completely changed the way I shop for denim, since this was the first time I bought jeans online without trying them on. They've since become my all-time favorite, and I've even gone back and purchased more pairs. I love the thickness of this style, and how each design is hand-finished with signature enameled buttons, which feel a bit like jewelry for your jeans. Plus, while these jeans have stretch, they never stretch out to the point of being unwearable; I can wear them for an entire weekend without any baginess. The chicest, most comfortable denim award goes to Khaite.

COLOVOS

What It's Made Of: 98% cotton, 2% polyurethane

Stretch Factor: Slight stretch

If this brand isn't on your radar, it should be. Colovos was created back in 2016 by former Helmut Lang designers Michael and Nicole Colovos (who also helmed the denim label Habitual). With this line, they focused on traditional tailoring and created really interesting pieces, such as these mid-rise, two-tone jeans with a subtle frayed trim down the sides. While the denim is fairly thin and the fit is slightly looser than others I've tried, they're still the most slimming pair of jeans I’ve ever owned. Plus, from the back they look black, but from the front they're dark blue — it's practically two looks in one.

AGOLDE

What It's Made Of: 100% cotton

Stretch Factor: Non-stretch

AGOLDE jeans come in a ton of amazing washes, but for me, the Pinch Waist High Rise Kick is the most perfect not-too-light, not-too-dark shade ever. Althought they’re the highest rise I’ve ever owned (12.5"), they look great with crop tops that show a bit too much skin for my liking, and also pair well with a classic ankle boot.

CITIZENS OF HUMANITY

Jordan Walczak

What It's Made Of: 100% cotton

Stretch Factor: Non-stretch

Citizen’s Charlotte high-rise, straight-leg jeans should be a staple in everyone’s closet. They hit my leg at just the right spot, making them super flattering, and the classic blue wash gives them a just-worn-in-enough feel. In other words, they're perfect for those casual Fridays at the office and for grabbing drinks with your friends on the weekend.

RE/DONE

Jordan Walczak

What It's Made Of: 100% cotton

Stretch Factor: Non-stretch

Re/Done’s Original Academy jean is essentially an all-in-one when it comes to straight-leg denim: The dark wash is timeless, the shape holds all day thanks to its cotton material, and they're cut from cut from vintage denim, so they’re eco-friendly, too. I already predict this pair will be on rotation in my closet for many years to come.
